The Cadillac V-Series.R is a true technological powerhouse, competing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans as the pinnacle of Cadillac’s motorsport efforts. The sound that the V-Series.R produces is also quite distinct, differing from the other cars on the grid in one particular way. Now, Cadillac is highlighting how the V-Series.R got its distinctive sound in the following video.
The video is exactly two minutes long and includes insights from Cadillac’s engineers and racing personnel. At the heart of the beast is the LMC55.R, a 5.5L cross-plane V8 with dual overhead cams, 32 valves, and a 90-degree cylinder configuration. The LMC55.R is also the only naturally aspirated engine competing in both the WEC Hypercar class and IMSA GPT class. This is the critical component when it comes to the exhaust note, as the lack of forced induction makes the LMC55.R stand out when compared to rivals like the BMW M Hybrid V8, the Porsche 963, and the Acura ARX-06, all of which are turbocharged.
In the video, we hear from Sports Car Racing Regulations Performance Engineer Vince Taiga, who highlights how the V-Series.R blends two types of technologies, including the all-electric motor component, which propels the race car as it leaves the pits, and the internal-combustion V8, which fires off once the race car gets up to speed. We also hear from Brent Pierce, Performance and Racing Engine Build Technician, who says that there are just five technicians total working to build these amazing engines.
“It will take us approximately one month from start to finish to complete one of these engines,” Pierce says.
The video includes a behind-the-scenes look at the engine building process, highlighting the incredible complexity of the propulsion systems. We also see the engine go on the dyno for testing and calibration, providing a glimpse into the meticulous process required to ensure the V-Series.R performs at its peak.
