A retired machine shop operator in Pennsylvania has created a real-life, street-legal bumper car using parts of a Chevy Aveo.
According to a report from local Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI-TV, Pennsylvania resident Dan Herschkopf combined an authentic ’50s-era bumper car body with a 2007 Chevy Aveo and an unspecified motorcycle to create what amounts to a street-legal carnival ride.
The creation includes two wheels in the back and one up front, and it drives like a normal vehicle. According to WPVI-TV, Herschkopf incorporated the front end of the Chevy Aveo, although it’s difficult to tell exactly where certain parts begin and where others end. The look is more or less seamless from front to back.
The project is the result of Herschkopf’s passion for building and decades of experience. After spending 35 years running a machine shop and turning out projects for clients, Herschkopf decided to focus on his own interests upon retiring. He chose a 1953 Lusse bumper car as his project, inspired by his visits to Knoebels amusement park with his nieces and nephews. Herschkopf saw the bumper car as a perfect challenge and an ideal way to stay engaged and busy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Herschkopf’s bumper car was carefully crafted to resemble the original 1953 Lusse model but with a unique, totally functional twist. Despite its playful origins, the creation still meets all the necessary criteria for a motorcycle/car, complete with an enclosed convertible design.
The result is completely unique, generating smiles and stares wherever it goes. Herschkopf says that he enjoys driving his Chevy Aveo bumper car around his neighborhood, often taking it for coffee runs. While the car is not designed for actual bumper car-style collisions and would likely crack if such an impact did occur, it still very much looks the part.
