GM’s Cruise Launches Emergency Responder Advisory Council

General Motors’ autonomous driving subsidiary Cruise has announced that it’s launched the Cruise Emergency Responder Advisory Council, a group of experts the robotaxi company’s internal teams can consult with in order to improve upon autonomous vehicle product development, along with incident and safety processes.

Designed to add piece of a mind to both sides, this council will allow the experts to directly field questions about AV technology, as well as enable Cruise to better operate in the experts’ respective fields. Of course, this move was likely a result of the October 2023 incident where a pedestrian was trapped and dragged underneath a Cruise AV unit after being struck by a human-driven vehicle.

Initial members of the Emergency Responder Advisory Council include:

  • International Association of Fire Chiefs
  • National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives
  • National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives
  • National Sheriffs’ Association
  • OnStar
  • Texas Police Chiefs Association

Thus far, Cruise claims to have engaged with as many as 600 responders through in-person training sessions. In these discussions, the self-driving subsidiary will also gather in-person feedback directly from same responders.

In other Cruise-related developments, GM Authority recently reported that the autonomous driving subsidiary appointed Marc Whitten as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Becoming effective just last week, Whitten boasts a wide breadth of experience in numerous roles, including General Manager and Vice President of various Amazon endeavors.

“In a few years, transportation will be fundamentally safer and more accessible than it is today, creating much more value for individuals and communities around the world. It is an opportunity of a lifetime to be part of this transformation,” CEO Marc Whitten noted. “The team at Cruise has built world-class technology, and I look forward to working with them to help bring this critical mission to life.”
