Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Combined GMC Yukon sales, those of the Yukon and Yukon XL, kept the duo in third behind the Ford Expedition from the previous quarter in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during Q2 2024 when ranked by sales volume, but within just 300 deliveries of overtaking The Blue Oval.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the Yukon’s corporate cousins that share the same architecture, continue to lead the segment on a combined basis, as has been the case for over two decades, while posting a 20 percent decline in sales to 36,898 units. Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) took the top spot again, with a 14 percent slip to 25,119 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes cumulative sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed with a nine percent uptick to 21,747 units. Notably, the Tahoe alone bested sales of both Expedition variants combined. Sales of the regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales) and the extended-length Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales) are combined this quarter, with the SUV family posting a cumulative four percent dip to 21,449 units. The Jeep Wagoneer, comprised of both the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the Grand Wagoneer), was next with a 107 percent leap in sales for 16,734 deliveries. The extended-length Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) saw a 29 percent drop for 11,779 deliveries. The Toyota Sequoia was next with a 33 percent swell to 6,910 units, while the Nissan Armada rounded out the list with an 18 percent downturn moving 4,856 units.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment grew by just one percent to 108,594 units during Q2 2024, meaning combined Yukon and Yukon XL sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The previous quarter, sales of the GMC Yukon duo saw it fall behind its crosstown rival, the Ford Expedition family, for the first time in nearly three years to place third. This quarter, however, Big Red’s full-size SUVs closed the gap to just 300 deliveries, potentially on a path to reclaim second place.

The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo continues to lead the mainstream full-size SUV segment, and combining sales of GMC and Chevy SUVs still enabled GM to account for over half of all sales here as the remaining three competitors slice up the rest of the pie. Better yet, a refresh of The General’s offerings is set to arrive for the 2025 model year to take on new and updated models from competitors.

We expect these model refreshes from GMC and Chevy to boost sales and strengthen GM’s command of the lucrative full-size SUV segment.

About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL

The refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon, arriving later this year, boasts a long list of upgrades and changes. These include new front and rear fascias, 5G network connectivity, and a huge screen that mirrors the same infotainment layout as the upcoming first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV and all-new 2024 GMC Acadia – a 15-inch infotainment display and an 11-inch driver information screen.

Also, for 2025, the GMC Yukon AT4 will finally get a diesel engine option for the first time, featuring the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine.

As before, the 2025 Yukon will continue to offer two gasoline engine options: the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 and the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87, with engine availability dependent on the trim level selected.

Recently, GM revealed a glimpse of the refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon, hinting at its impending debut, though GM Authority has secured spy images of the SUV in full view for the premium Denali trim, the range-topping Denali Ultimate trim, and the off-road-oriented AT4 trim before you’re supposed to see it. Check out the Denali Ultimate in Onyx Black, with an even better look here.

Here’s what we know and expect for the 2025 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

  1. So Canadian sales numbers on ICE powered Yukon’s are substantially down. What a surprise!

    Possible reasons are:

    1. Midcycle refresh delayed to 2025 so purchasers, if they can afford the vehicle and the exorbitant taxes, are waiting for the updated version. And GMC keeps kicking the order release date down the road.
    2. Canada’s new Federal “Luxury” tax on vehicles over $100,000 CDN and Province Sales Taxes. Federal is 5% and 20% of the value over $100,000 or 10% of total cost once the price reaches $200,000) Example, Extra Tax on $125,000 is $125,000 – $100,000 x 20% = $5,000 This is on top of the 5% Federal Goods and Service Tax on 100% of the vehicle sale price. So total Federal Taxes on the $125.000 vehicle is $11,250 in Alberta, where is no provincial sales tax. Then even more in the other provinces that have a sales tax. BC another 7% , 8% in Ontario and another 10% in the maritime provinces. So in the Maritime Provinces one would pay whopping $23,750 in taxes for the purchase of a $125,000 Yukon
    3. Current GMC pricing has gotten to the point where it will not attract purchasers.

With all of this, Yukons are becoming unaffordable and although they are great vehicles, they are perhaps losing their value for money edge.

With these factors especially 2. and 3., sales may continue to decline in the coming quarters in Canada.
