Matching up closely to the American auto industry average for new 2024 vehicles, GMC scored moderately in the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures the number of problems per hundred vehicles (PP100) to create a ranking of brands and models from the least problems to the most.
Released on June 27th, the IQS results show GMC with a PP100 score of 201, just six problems away from the overall U.S. car industry average of 195 problems per hundred vehicles.
While GMC manages to maintain parity with U.S. auto market quality as a whole, its PP100 has risen considerably since last year. In 2023, it ranked high in the study with 167 problems per hundred vehicles, with 34 less problems than in 2024. Its PP100 score was even better in 2022 at 162, which would be enough to put it in third place in this year’s study.
Speculatively, the sudden increase in problems with GMC vehicles for 2024 may be related to the launch of several new or recently refreshed models in Big Red’s lineup. These include the debut of the all-new, heavily re-engineered and revised 2024 GMC Acadia, the 2024 GMC Canyon, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD and and the GMC Hummer EV.
The Initial Quality Study found EVs to be riddled with problems, with their high dependence on technology – like that of premium vehicles – making them much more issue-prone than basic mass market ICE vehicles.
EVs averaged 226 PP100 in the study, 86 problems higher than the 180 PP100 of the average gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle. Frank Hanley, auto benchmarking director at J.D. Power, said “cutting edge, tech-filled BEVs and PHEVs are experiencing problems that are of a severity level high enough” to cause triple the rate of repair visits to dealership service departments than ICE models.
J.D. Power combined the survey results from 99,144 people who have bought or leased a new 2024 model-year vehicle with electronic repair data to create an accurate snapshot of brands’ and models’ relative quality rankings.

The world is run by “C” average students….
“found EVs to be riddled with problems.”
I’m shocked ….. SHOCKED .
Slowly slipping below the quality expectation of the American Auto Market. Building junk with more recalls is not what we want or expect to purchase.
There is competition in auto manufacturing in case you forgot!
They will keep producing crap because people keep buying why change
