GM To Fix Chevy Silverado HD Intermittent Trailer Brake Loss Issue

GM has issued a Customer Satisfaction Program for certain units of the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and 2024 Chevy Silverado HD offering a fix for an issue involving occasional loss of trailer brake function.

Customer Satisfaction Program number N232414840 applies to 2020 model-year and 2024 model-year Chevy Silverado HD trucks equipped with the integrated trailer brake controller (RPO code JL1), which may have a fault causing voltage feedback and the noted brake problems.

Specifically, if the voltage in the Chevy Silverado HD trailer battery increases beyond the voltage of the pickup’s main battery, feedback will occur. This can trigger a false short to ground, causing the vehicle to shut down the trailer brakes and make them non-functional. A notification of the short will appear on the instrument cluster.

GM dealerships are instructed to remedy the issue with the currently available fix. This consists of replacing the existing Trailer Brake Control Module with a new module, which has been produced to the correct specifications so that it will not cause the feedback or false short.

The fix is to be applied to all affected 2020 and 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks, regardless of current ownership, free of charge to the owner. Notification letters must be sent by the dealership to recent purchasers of affected Silverado HD trucks notifying them of the fault and the available customer satisfaction program.

The program is available through August 31st, 2026. The number of vehicles affected is currently unclear, although GM informs us that a significant number of units are currently in dealer possession or in transit. Notably, the trailer brake controller (JL1) is is optional on the Work Truck (WT) and Custom trim levels of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD, while it is equipped as standard on the LT, LTZ and High Country trims.

The integrated trailer brake controller is also required to order when choosing the optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine on the WT and Custom.

As a reminder, the 2024 Silverado HD is motivated by two powerplants, including the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine developing 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The aforementioned 6.6L L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is uprated for 2024, providing output of 470 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 975 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD utilizes a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform. Production is takes place at the GM Flint Assembly plant in Michigan and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.

  1. Well will this also apply to the GMC HD 3500 trucks. I know I have heard the owner experience this condition. As a owner and I tow my 48 foot toy hauler that weighs 18,000# will this be also addressed. My production date is January 2024.

Will they also release the “Upfitters Switch” panel for the Ultimate Denali? We have paid for the high expense of the Ultimate D and wait for the switch package? I have the factory harness for the snow plow but no switch package?

    Thanks
    Chuck

    1. You have to replace the module not the Controller.

  6. We had the module replaced at the dealership and the first time we hooked the truck up to the travel trailer it fried the cord to the trailer! Not sure what damage it it did to trailer lights. Hope we don’t need a lawyer!

    1. I got the same answer from a dealer. It does not apply to my VIN, but I have had trailer brake issues just as described. FYI, to replace the module out of warranty, it is $120 for the part plus labor. Also important, the part is on National Backorder….so good luck.

  8. I have had this recalled TBM replaced twice in my 2024 LTZ 3500 diesel dually and I’m still experiencing intermittent loss of my trailer brakes. This a dangerous game that GM is playing with these vehicles.
