Gestamp, a Spanish automotive supplier and one of the world’s largest body-in-white and chassis suppliers is constructing a new $64.5 million production facility in Chesterfield Township, Michigan. The new Chesterfield facility is part of a broader $390 million investment from Gestamp into the company’s various Michigan facilities. The new Chesterfield plant is set to supply GM with steel blanks for electric vehicle assemblies at The General’s Orion Assembly plant.
Gestamp’s new investments are bolstered by a $5 million performance-based grant and a 15-year 100-percent SESA tax exemption worth up to $6 million. According to the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the incentive request will help offset the cost of constructing the new facility in Chesterfield, as opposed to competing locations in the southern U.S.
According to a report from Crain’s Detroit Business, Gestamp’s new Chesterfield facility is located at 52153 Sierra Drive. It will span some 450,000 square feet. The facility will occupy a 42-acre plot. The new plant will create 390 new jobs once it opens its doors. There are also plans for a potential 300,000-square-foot expansion to the facility, if necessary.
Gestamp is expanding in Chesterfield and renovating its facilities in Chelsea, Mason, and Lapeer. These upgrades will create new positions, offering an average pay of $28.14 an hour. The total investment is expected to create up to 580 new jobs in Michigan. Gestamp operates more than 100 plants located in 24 countries worldwide. It’s considered one of the biggest body-in-white and chassis suppliers in the world.
The new steel blanks from Gestamp’s Chesterfield facility will support the GM Orion Assembly plant, which is set to begin production of the new Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV in late 2025. These new all-electric pickups were initially slated for production in late 2024. However, GM postponed the timeline to “better manage capital investment while aligning with evolving EV demand.”

The EV mandate is about to bite the dust. Why keep throwing money away on this?
Autos need lighter weight materials. Weight keep rising on every update of the same model which should require a bigger engine but no they give us smaller and smaller.
