General Motors rival Ford has announced plans to expand production of its Super Duty lineup of heavy-duty pickup trucks to its Oakville Assembly plant in Canada.
As covered by GM Authority sister publication Ford Authority, the Oakville Assembly plant will join the Kentucky Truck and Ohio Assembly plants in producing the Super Duty trucks. Interestingly, this comes as The Blue Oval has reportedly struggled to satisfy demand for the recently redesigned HD pickup.
“There is durable demand for Super Duty from Ford Pro customers as spending on infrastructure and related construction activity remains high,” Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis stated. “Many retail customers have not been able to get their trucks fast enough because of our production constraints. Unlocking Super Duty volume will also support businesses and tradespeople who rely on these trucks and first responders who serve their communities.”
Moving forward, Ford plans to build approximately 100,000 units of the Super Duty at the Oakville plant every year starting in 2026. In order to reach this estimate, the Michigan-based automaker will invest roughly $2.3 million to retool the facility, as it was previously supposed to support production of all-electric vehicles. Of course, GM Authority recently reported that The Blue Oval had delayed its next-gen EVs in favor of hybrids.
Up until now, the Oakville facility manufactured the discontinued Ford Edge and the previous-generation Lincoln Nautilus.
“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand,” Ford President and CEO Jim Farley noted. “This move benefits our customers and supercharges our Ford Pro commercial business. At the same time, we look forward to introducing three-row electric utility vehicles, leveraging our experience in three-row utility vehicles and our learnings as America’s No. Two electric vehicle brand to deliver fantastic, profitable vehicles.”
It’s worth noting that General Motors also builds full-size pickup trucks in Canada at the GM Oshawa plant.

I would not be surprised to see ICE and hybrid versions of the Silverado/Sierra added to the mix at Irion or Factory Zero
Only $2.3 million to retool a plant?
B-illion not M-illion.
The article says M-illion.
What a bizarre title. “GM Rival Ford” who on planet earth doesn’t know what Ford is? Just say “Ford…”
How can they retool an Edge facility into an HD truck facility for only $2.3 million? That seems impossible. Has to be a typo.
… and if it’s not a typo, pretty sure I wouldn’t want my truck coming off that line! (Not that I would buy a Ford anything anyway.)
