GM has filed a patent application for a surround view vehicle egress assistance system. The patent application was assigned patent number US 2024/0242507 A1 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and was published on July 18th, 2024. The patent application was originally filed on January 12th, 2023, and lists several different engineers as the inventors, including Gurmeet S. Sidhu, Akram M. Abdel-Rahman, Mansoor Alghooneh, Russel A. Patenaude, and Patrick G.G. DiGioacchino.
The patent application describes a system designed to assist drivers with safely exiting their vehicles in a variety of different environments, addressing certain challenges. This system uses a suite of sensors, such as cameras and laser technology, to detect potential obstacles around the vehicle. It can also identify potential hazards like other cars, walls, curbs, or fire hydrants that may be in the path of an opening door.
When a driver is about to open a door, the system performs an analysis to predict if the door might hit any of the identified obstacles. It calculates the swing path of the door, with consideration for the vehicle’s dimensions and the detected obstacles’ locations. If a potential collision is detected, the system can alert the driver through visual or audio warnings. Additionally, the system can determine the severity of a potential collision by estimating the impact based on factors like the door’s velocity and the obstacle’s characteristics.
This system also includes a feature for cloud communication, where data from the sensors can be sent to a cloud storage system. This information can be used for fleet management or shared with other vehicles to enhance overall safety on the roads. The benefits of this system include increased safety for passengers when exiting the vehicle, reduced risk of door damage, and enhanced overall vehicle automation and intelligence.
