American Expeditionary Vehicles, or AEV, is a name synonymous with rugged, high-quality off-road components and other aftermarket upgrades for a range of different vehicles. Now the company has introduced a set of AEV skid plates to protect the undersides of 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon trucks, along with later model years.
These skids provide the same underbody protection as the AEV skid plates equipped on the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, since they are the identical component offered for other trims.
Designed for use with 4WD-configured Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, the AEV skid plates range includes four plates, specifically a front IFS skid plate, a transmission / transfer case skid plate, a fuel tank skid plate and a differential plate skid plate. Produced out of hot-stamped boron steel that offers high strength-to-weight ratio, these plates weigh 13, 29, 29 and 9 pounds respectively.
The plates are made in Canada and have been OEM-validated for strength and durability. They feature a tough black e-coating to prevent rust and other types of corrosion. These steel components, ranging from 1.6 millimeters to 2.5 millimeters thick depending on the plate, are “built to withstand punishing impacts” according to AEV.
Installation of the plates requires jack stands and a few hand tools, and is rated “easy” by AEV. Each plate takes 30 minutes to an hour to properly install, making a full setup armoring the truck’s underbelly against rocks, stumps, and other obstacles possible to add to a pickup in under four hours. AEV says the plates will enable the owner to “embark on your next off-road adventure with confidence and peace of mind.” The plates cost between $299 and $550 individually, or $1,737 for all four.
In addition to these skid plates, AEV also offers a skid plate set for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra and a snorkel kit for the Colorado and Canyon pickups. GM also made the Skid Plate Package, LPO (RPO code PCQ) available on the 2023 Colorado WT trim.
As a reminder, the third-generation Chevy Colorado is motivated by three engine choices – the Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine developing 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the Turbo Plus 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine rated at 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, and the Turbo High-Output 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine providing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The third-gen GMC Canyon exclusively cradles the Turbo High-Output 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, similarly rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
Both trucks are underpinned by the updated 31XX-2 platform, with production taking place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
