2025 GMC Terrain Elevation Black Edition Caught Completely Uncovered: Photos

The 2025 model year debuts the latest generational overhaul for the GMC Terrain crossover, complete with a variety of updates and changes. Chief among these is a new design, both inside and out, plus new tech items and other convenience features. As was the case previously, customers will have several options when it comes to the trim level lineup and customization. Now, we’re getting a look at the 2025 GMC Terrain Elevation Black Edition, which was recently caught completely uncovered thanks to the following GM Authority spy photos.

The front end of the 2025 GMC Terrain Black Edition.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the all-new 2025 GMC Terrain, with previous GM Authority spy photos catching the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels. However, the prototype featured in the photos seen here is noteworthy for the optional upgrades applied to the exterior, specifically the optional Black Edition package.

The Black Edition package is also available for the next-generation 2024 GMC Acadia Elevation, where it’s offered for an additional $2,200 and is tagged with RPO code WBP. Applied to the 2024 Acadia, the Black Edition package adds a Black grille and 22-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels (RPO code RVH).

Looking over these spy photos, this 2025 GMC Terrain Elevation prototype also appears to be wearing the optional Black Edition package. As we can see, this prototype is running a black grille treatment and a set of black wheels, while the roof shows off a black finish to give the body a two-tone look against the Volcanic Red (paint code GNT) side panels. The badging is done in black as well, both on the sides and in the rear.

As for the mechanicals, the 2025 GMC Terrain is expected to cradle the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, while the GM D2 platform will provide the underpinnings. Production of the next-gen 2025 Terrain is expected to begin at the GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico later this year.

  1. Nice, but back end is really generic and I’d never shell out $2200 for a past-its-prime black edition.

    1. Spending thousands on any color package seems like a waste. I’d rather spend it on the powertrain or pocket the rest.

      1. Maybe it’s the image quality but these photos show that there’s such a thing as a bad color combination. These Black/Midnight editions never did it for me. I guess it somethings that caters to millenials. Meanwhile, 22″ wheels on a Terrain? Those don’t look like 22s to me. Maybe 20″ or even 19″.

  2. Blacked-out edition is certainly not my cup of tea. I think it makes your nice new car look like she it! But, to each his own.

  3. I can’t wrap my head around why GMC hasn’t revealed the new 2025 terrain and Yukon yet. The ‘25 equinox is already hitting dealer lots. I just don’t understand why the terrain is so far behind because they are very similar and built in the same factory by the same parent company.

    1. I can’t wrap my head around why GM isn’t introducing hybrids and PHEV’s if they want to capture greater market share. They have the technology. Why are they dragging their feet?

  4. Looks pretty good. Wheels don’t look yuge this time around, but I guess they’re 19 inchers. I would rather have a normal Elevation. I hope the color palette is varied.

  5. GM is back to the same body different front and rear clips again. If I didn’t do a double take, from the side it’s identical to the Equinox. No longer wearing it’s own unique skin.

  6. No diesel?

  7. I’m one who is okay with the black package option. But there are two things I wish would change.

    1. I’d love to see the wheel arches body color across the lineup. Not just the Terrain, but overall in the industry.

    2. I’m not sure I’m understanding the front grille frame design and how it spiders off to the headlight and lower fascia trim. Its a bit oddly shaped and unnecessary.

  8. I’d love to have a black 2025 Terrain AT4 but GM lost me putting that poultry engine in it.

    1. I had rented both 2022 Equinox and 2023 Terrain with 1.5T, loved both of them, but AWD makes them overloaded and weak. New Terrain FWD with 1.5T will be perfect.

      1. How are the CVTs in these though? That’s all you get with the FWD. Most auto forums I read will talk down about CVTs compared a traditional multiple speed gearbox.

And plenty of people in the northern markets prefer then sense of security with AWD. Which to your point is why so many here argue it would be nice to have a larger engine option.

      2. “New Terrain FWD with 1.5T will be perfect.”

Not if you live where snow and ice are a possibility for more than 2 months of the year.

Note that in the recent model model year Terrains AWD only added 60 lbs to weight. I think it was more the Terrain’s 9 speed (vs 6 speed in Equinox) that accounted for the performance difference between those models.
But be aware that starting with the 2025 model year both the FWD Equinox and Terrain get the CVT transmission while the AWD models are hooked to an 8 speed transmission. The CVT transmission drops peaked torque to 184 ft. lbs in the FWD models while the 8 speed maintains the 203 ft. lbs. in the AWD models. Horsepower stays the same across the board. Point is: You may experience no performance difference between FWD and AWD models in both the new Terrain and Equinox models due to disparity in torque.

  9. A complete waste of money. I would much rather spend it on a more powerful engine or hybrid setup.

  10. For the first time, the Terrain share a lot of sheet metal with the Equinox. The profiles are identical.

  11. GM offers all these so called off road and sport models but no 2.0 engine option all are just body cladding for show.
