The 2025 GMC Sierra will offer a new Universal Vehicle Module (UVM), designed for use by upfitters as an available, extra-charge option.
Also made available for 2024 GMC Sierra pickups from later in the production cycle, the Universal Vehicle Module (RPO code KGU) can be optioned on the Pro trim level only for the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500, and for all trim levels of the 2025 GMC Sierra HD.
The Controller Area Network (CAN) – a commercial vehicle and police vehicle technology that enables communication using SAE J1939 protocols – is included in the software of the UVM. Integration of upfit equipment controls for the module is handled by ten switchable inputs/outputs and a Custom Configuration Tool, usable by individual upfitters as well as fleets.
Auto Vehicle Start, Shutdown Inhibit, Fast Idle and Snow Plow are functions that come with the Universal Vehicle module in the 2025 GMC Sierra. Auto Vehicle Start handles indirect alternator control to keep a steady level of battery voltage as needed, alongside indirect temperature control.
Keeping a utility pickup running to provide power to external equipment can be handled by Shutdown Inhibit, and extra power for more demanding applications is offered by Fast Idle. Active safety features that would prevent using a snowplow are shut down by Snow Plow Support.
The 2025 GMC Sierra variant of the Universal Vehicle Module is priced at an additional $295. The module itself, a customer interface harness and instructions are included in the price. The Chevy Blazer EV PPV and the 2025 Chevy Silverado also get the UVM as a standard feature or an option, respectively.
Motivation for the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 is supplied by one of four available powerplants, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline TurboMax engine rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the atmospheric 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
Meanwhile, the 2025 GMC Sierra HD is powered by the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, as well as the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine.
All 2025 GMC Sierra models ride on the GM T1 platform. Production of the Sierra HD takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan while the Sierra 1500 is produced at  the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico.
