In October 2023, General Motors released a Safety Recall for select units of the 2014 Buick Verano due to an issue with the roof rail airbags, and expanded that recall in December 2023 to include a greater number of vehicles. Now, according to a bulletin sent to dealerships in June 2024, the affected cars will soon be fixed.
The problem: affected vehicles may have a condition where left- or right-sided roof rail airbag (RRAB) inflators, which are positioned above the headliner, may contain a manufacturing defect that could result in a rupture at the inflator weld joint.
The hazards: if this condition were to occur, the compressed gas could escape causing a partial inflation of the affected roof rail airbag where one or more sections of the inflator may enter or exit the vehicle, which subsequently could cause injury to a person in or around the vehicle during an inflation event.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the roof rail airbag inflator modules as necessary.
Affected components: roof rail airbag inflator.
Affected vehicles:
Number of affected vehicles: 2,861 Buick Verano units are affected by the recall, in addition to 17,831 Chevy Cruze units for a total of 20,712 cars. Vehicles involved in this Safety Recall were placed under a stop-delivery order on December 21st, 2023Â and have been held ever since due to the lack of replacement parts..
Owners should: General Motors will once again notify owners of affected vehicles by mail starting on July 31st, 2024, instructing them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. After 10 years, most of those vehicles have passed on or changed hands. Good luck trying to get the remaining vehicles back in for a recall.
And the owners that actually come back in for service, the salesmen will be circling like buzzards and vultures, looking for their next victim.
