Introduced for the 1961 model year, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the top trim level for the unibody F-85 compact. There is some debate about the origin of the Cutlass name, which was taken either from the type of sword, or possibly from the Vought F7U Cutlass US Navy fighter jet. The Olds Cutlass would eventually become its own model as a mid-size passenger car featuring body-on-frame construction. The Cutlass line would come to include the Hurst/Olds and 4-4-2 muscle cars, the Vista Cruiser wagon, and the plush Cutlass Supreme.
The third-generation Oldsmobile Cutlass debuted for the 1968 model year, with two-door models riding on a 112-inch wheelbase, and four-doors getting a longer 116-inch wheelbase. The two-door models had a fastback-style rear roofline. The 4-4-2 became its own model, and the limited-production Hurst/Olds featured the 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8.
1972 would mark the final year of the third-generation Oldsmobile Cutlass. There were minor styling changes to the grille and taillights. Engine options included several variations of the 350 Rocket Small Block V8 and the 455 Rocket Big Block. The 4-4-2 was no longer a separate model, and reverted to a Cutlass trim level.
Our feature 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible was sold new in St. Louis, Missouri by Carlson Oldsmobile. The original owner drove the car until the early 1980s. The Cutlass was treated to refurbishment in the late 1980s. In 2005, the original owner sold the car to the second owner, who again sold the car in 2016. The third owner is now offering the car for sale via auction. The Cutlass Supreme convertible is finished in Covert Tan with a beige power convertible top over a brown vinyl interior. It is powered by a 350 cubic-inch Rocket V8 fed by a Holley four-barrel carb, backed by a three-speed automatic transmission and a Positraction rear end. The Cutlass is equipped with power brakes with front discs, air conditioning, power convertible top with interior-colored top boot, and an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo. The Cutlass rolls on fifteen-inch Rally wheels wrapped in raised white-letter BFGoodrich Radial T/A rubber. Included in the sale are service records, original 1972 license plates, the original Oldsmobile AM radio, documentation of the engine rebuild, a copy of the original title, the jack and spare tire.
