As GM Authority covered previously, the GM Design team recently published a series of images showing off the Pontiac G8 show car, considered to be the brand’s final concept vehicle before GM axed it outright in 2009. Prior to the images recently going online, the G8 show car had never before been seen by the public. Interestingly, the G8 show car also included what appears to be a redesigned logo, leading us to ask – was GM working on a new Pontiac logo?
The redesigned Pontiac logo was spotted by GM Authority readers following our coverage of the G8 show car, who called out the logo in the comments. Compared to the logo used prior to the brand’s discontinuation, the redesigned logo seen on the G8 show car sketches features a compass or tweezer-like shape, with a small opening at the bottom of the upside-down triangle layout. On the completed show car, we can see a Pontiac badge showing off a monochrome look with a slightly sharper “V shape” than what we’re used to. By comparison, the standard logo used prior to the brand’s discontinuation had a closed shape. The redesigned logo is also missing the standard star or cross shape in the middle. Both logos, however, include two upturned points at the top.
The next-generation G8 show car was never formally introduced to the public prior to the recent images going online. That said, its reshaped Pontiac logo did appear on the Pontiac G8 GT show car that made its formal introduction at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.
For those readers who may have missed it, a well-known automotive magazine recently ran an ad that sparked a huge amount of speculation that GM was poised to revive the Pontiac brand. Unfortunately, GM later confirmed that the ad was little more than a joke.

Really, who cares?
Yeah. The “Pontique” ?
Thanks, but No .
Blog website’s care. There’s no better clickbait to drive traffic (and comments) on an automotive forum than a “Could Pontiac come back?” thread on a slow news day…
It’s not a joke. GM is testing the temperature to determine if Pontiac still has a following. With so many Buick dealerships closing it creates an opportunity plus GMC showrooms need something to increase traffic.
What would Pontiac 2.0 be? It can’t sell Vibes, Sunfire or Equinox clones. Death of Camaro creates an opportunity as does Dodge killing Charger/Challenger. Cadillac has Alpha and Omega which would only require reskining. Even Camaro, as firebird, could get new sheet metal but avoid substantial re-engineering costs.
Yeeeeessss! Bring back the Pontiac! I had 3 Pontiacs! My 4th vehicle is currently a Buick, only because they stopped making Pontiacs!
Bring back Pontiac which includes a performance car similar to the GTO.
I had 5 Pontiacs and still have the last two, a 2007 Solstice and a 2009 G-6 that I bought new.
I have had multiple Pontiacs too. And still have an 2006 Solstice
GM pls STOP USING LOWER case
I hate gm It’s GM
And don’t use pontiac it’s Pontiac
Lower case seems so feminine and unimportant
Let’s dump this leftist BS
SteveInvictaInsignia;
Dream on.
A Trax with a split grill and a Ram Air 1.2 with a 148hp…..152 with the WS6 package.
Stop deluding yourself….
Dodge isn’t killing charger.
“GMC showrooms need something to increase traffic.”
Let Oldsmobile die.
Let Pontiac die.
Let Buick die.
Then look around and say “Oh # we need product to sell”??
There are probably like 3 standalone GMC dealers…..
Was it GM that placed that phony ad?
Christophet:
No.
I’m sorry that Pontiac was discontinued, but these dreamers will be disappointed again if they think Pontiac is coming back.
If it were anytime before 2020 I would care. With the dire direction everything is going I could care a less if Pontiac does come back because it will be nothing like a Pontiac that is produced. This is gM after all.
Guys…relax.
This is nothing more than a click-bait thread to benefit GMA.
Respectfully…nothing “authoritative”about it.
Want a Pontiac? Great. Join your local Pontiac car club and find the car of your dreams.
GM is not going to make it for you.
What’s clickbait? The GM Design Center has been posting these on their Instagram all week long.
John:
Exactly.
First a raft of pointless CT6 stuff, now this.
I wish gm would bring Pontiac back as the enthusiast and fun brand. Right now, lowercase gm makes a whole lot of boring. That’s fine, boring pays the bills, but you also need something exciting. gm and the entire auto industry is just boring af right now. Monochrome crossovers and EVs that even half of their buyers regret purchasing.
John, you couldn’t have said it better. The entire auto industry, with few
exceptions, is at a low point in history. Humdrum, repetitive designs,
with minimal excitement. Cookie cutter SUVs big and small, giant pickup
trucks, and fat vans everywhere. Imaginative automotive designs are a
thing of the past.
They floated around a few new logo ideas…..GM standard operating procedure before they close a brand.
“Lets try a new logo….see if that does anything”
The newer lowercase “gm” logo tells us quite a bit about the direction of this company, if you remember that article and discussion here.
GM won’t let you have a blue Canyon/Colorado but you think they are marshalling the resources to resurrect a brand and then proceed to badge re-engineer every product in the portfolio? No.
Uh…that’s because Glacier Blue is being dropped for Riptide Blue. They are building out the color for 2024 by August, blue will be back for 2025.
Why people want Pontiac back? They were just rebadged Chevys. G8 = SS, G5 = Cobalt, G3= Aveo, Torrent= Equinox, Montana= Uplander
The SS Chevrolet was a rebadged Pontiac G8, not the other way around. G8
came out in 2008 – 2009, the SS was years later.
Wasn’t the Pontiac G8 a badge engineered Holden Commodore VE
Fiero, Solstice, Grand Am……..
Fiero used the Chevette front suspension and X-Car rear drivetrain.
Solstice was shared with the Saturn Sky.
Grand Am was shared with Olds (Calais) and Buick (Skylark).
That’s a rather, ummm, “female” version of the Pontiac logo…..
Yes, I see it, too!
Mary has emasculated gm. It’s over.
On the Mary:
That’s what I was thinking. This Pontiac thing will/would never happen on Mary’s watch.
Not after the last hoax this is nothing
Hey Pontiac bashers. Why is it gm will not sell the name and other things associated with Pontiac. Why is it they hassle and legally pursue people who were selling clothing and other stuff with Pontiac on it? Must be they are still playing with the idea.
Because they have a copyright and if anyone is going to make money on the logo, GM wants a taste of it.
They aren’t making a new Jaws movie but if you start selling things with Jaws on it, Universal will come down on you too.
There is still a chance this might be true. Too much is leaking out to maybe not be true. They are probably watching all the chatter on pontiac coming back. From what I heard a couple years ago GM still owns and renewed the copy write on Pontiac.
Over the years we had a lot of Pontiacs and again it’s doubtful GM will bring Pontiac back. With that said today GM has nothing to offer bland styling (Where are you Harley Earl/Bill Mitchell ) average performance, and really nothing to stand out compared to the rest of the manufacturers, that’s why i’m on my 3rd Ford in a row,and that’s saying something! Are you listening Mary Barra. and the above comment is from a GM fan.
I just have one thing to say to all you Pontiac haters.
Who put the muscles cars on the map, you got it PONTIAC
Pontiac dominated racing on the round track and drag strip in the 60s and into the early 70s
Come on now give me some thumbs down, but you know it’s true.
My first GTO 1967 post 4sp car ran 11:57 from 1969 to 1972 drag strip.
Name on my GTO was (ALMOST)
If you squint really hard, the back of my 2023 Challenger Hellcat bears a strong resemblance to a 1979 Trans Am. It has been too long, Pontiac lost some of their customers to Dodge, most of which are loyal to Dodge now, but most of their performance car customers to the Germans, most of whom would never consider an American car.
Re all the snide remarks asking the rhetorical question “who cares?” You guys cared enough to read the article and then waste precious time leaving comments.
Sí, parece que están probando las aguas y sorprenderás. Espero que traigan a Pontiac de vuelta. Les hace falta un performance asequible,a buen precio. 💪
Mary will surly screw the logo up like she has everything else.
It’s to bad they don’t make parts for my G8 2009 base models.
I like the car it’s getting harder to repair it !
Gm just worried about making profits to them and stock holders!!!!
It’s a company, of course that’s what they do.
Let it go…..let it go…..can’t bring back that caaaaaar.
I own a ’98 Pontiac Firebird I bought new. I’d love to own a new Pontiac that’s not from the last minimum…
Now I love Pontiac, but it would be foolish to introduce yet another brand back into the market when there’s still work that needs to be done with the current brand portfolio. For one thing. GMC hasn’t had a performance model since the syclone, and Buick since 2020. The Avista and Avenir concepts should’ve been produced, but GM just loves to force Buick into Cadillac and Chevy’s shadow.
We’ll, what could have been never came to light and gm has no intention for the Brand to be resurrected so in a disappointing way, we can move on.
Looks like lady parts.
Todo indica que General Motors SÍ está probando las aguas para relanzar a Pontiac. ¡Somos muchos los que lo deseamos! 💪
No Habla Espanol.
I think bringing Pontiac back would be the best thing GM could do. Make it the muscle car side of GM at that. We need some big V8 performance cars on the market. Make us proud to own your products again. I have owned alot of cars and every Pontiac I have owned was fun with more excitement then the chevy version of the same car. I recently bought a 2024 gmc 3500. I would say I would love to have a new Pontiac to go with my collection of old Pontiac cars I have aswell. With that said you have my word I would buy a brand new Pontiac the day I see a dealership with them.
Agree, but ‘cept the V8 part. Make it an EV muscle car/sports car brand.
Next up: “Packard Makes a Comeback”.
As we speak, they’re slowly tearing-down the old plant in Detroit, that some say, could be a potential site for a possible new location associated with this storied automobile.
You want legendary engines? …few matched what Packard offered in cars, fighter aircraft and championship powerboats.
Looking forward to the new Logo and Hood Ornament!
Ask the Man who owns one….
Why have nine divisions (including GMC, Saturn, Hummer, and Geo) when Toyota is doing just fine with only two (after dropping Scion)?
I owned a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT, and there was a guy on the G8 forums creating these badges and selling them. I had one in white to match my car. It was sweet looking.
Pontiac sure had some really cool cars over the years. Was sad to see GM pull the plug on them during the dark ages.
There an opportunity for GM to eliminate two birds with one stone. If you look at the elimination of Chevrolet Camero and the long age Impala sedan. Gm could take the Pontiac G8 replacement concept off the shelf. Install it in Chevrolet line up as ” The Family sedan you want to drive!” Giving consumers the option of 4 Cylinder Turbos , 6 Cylinder Turbos and twin Turbocharger engines. Or even Hybrids engines options and already have V8 engines available. Can market a brand new vehicle and not a strip down Cadillac CT5 or CT4 . Of course we’re taking rear wheels or all wheel drives vehicles. A true contender for the Germany mid-sized automobiles.
If you look at the next generation of the G8, clearly the stylists looked to the Solstice for inspiration. This car would have been an absolute head-turner, whether in the showroom or on the highway.
Honestly, having a reintroduction of a older name plate that is priced as a solid entry level vehicle does seem promising. However, no one would want a copy and paste version of some of GM’s past works. Now a an all electric line up consisting of the Sunfire, Vibe, and maybe a not so rugged Aztec could work out in their favor. 🤷🏾♂️
Cadillac is getting very Pontiac-esque. I like the direction they’re going. I’m 47 and I’ve never not owned a Pontiac. Love and miss them!
Even if they brought back Pontiac, it wouldn’t have a Pontiac engine. That’s what made Pontiac so popular in the past. Remember the Smokey and the Bandit Pontiac from the ’70’s. In so many ways the Pontiac motor was a better motor then either the Chevy small or big block motors. It’s out side dimensions never changed from the original in 1955, just the cubic inch displacement from 1987, not 1983, all the way to 455 in the ’70’s
