This Pontiac G8 Show Car Is The Brand’s Last Concept Vehicle

General Motors has published images of the very last concept vehicle ever created for the Pontiac brand. Dubbed the Pontiac G8 show car, the images reveal an attractive, futuristic four-door with chiseled lines and a slick interior. The Pontiac G8 show car was completed in 2008 by the GM Advanced Studio in California, but was never shown to the public.

The new images were posted to social media by the GM Design team and include illustrations, as well as images of the exterior and interior coming together as a full-scale concept car.

The design incorporates long, vertically oriented lighting elements in the front fascia, as well as the characteristic double nostril grille seen on countless other Pontiac models. The roofline is low, with a swept-back silhouette that emphasizes the car’s sporting attitude. The rear end is rounded, giving the concept a sort of hatchback shape. Highlight details include large seven-spoke wheels, integrated exhaust pipes, a full glass roof, and what appears to be flush door handles.

The cabin is also quite impressive, with a molded seat design and angular, futuristic-looking asymmetric dash layout. The sides of the cabin are divided by a large center console that runs from the front of the vehicle to the rear. Looking over the cabin, we can’t help but be reminded of the C8 Corvette dash layout.

GM discontinued the Pontiac brand following the company’s bankruptcy in 2009 and subsequent government bailout. Fans of the brand have called for its return ever since. An ad in a prominent automotive magazine recently sparked a flurry of speculation that GM was finally bringing the Pontiac brand back from the dead, but unfortunately, the ad proved to be fake. And that’s really too bad, especially in light of the attractive designs that Pontiac created, including the G8 show car.

  1. looks like it could have been based on the same platform as the CTS

    1. I think so too, 2nd gen CTS platform.

      1. Seems like all concept cars from all manufactures tease and wow us with cars we want to buy and own but then just give us something watered down to look like everything else on the road ! Its always been this way since the first cars on the road to present !

        1. That’s been a habit with Subaru mostly. Around ten years ago Subaru unveiled a very wild looking concept car that previewed the 2015 WRX then later when the 2015 WRX was unveiled it was so watered down looking that it looked almost nothing like the concept car that previewed it. Surprisingly the Cadillac Lyriq concept from 2019 looks just like the production version of the Lyriq. At least the design of the Lyriq wasn’t watered down thankfully

  3. Nice, but a full-sized hatchback would have failed. And the rear looks like a big Solstice.

    1. I think they were going with a connection to the Solstice, to be fair that hatch wasn’t the only thing going against it….its a GM, its a Pontiac, even if it would put an M5 on the trailer C&D would have still made mullet references and mentioned the J2000 in its review and the GM would have killed it after 2 years of production because it’s not as profitable as making Silverados…….

  4. Not really a production car but parts of it could have been used.

The other factor here is Lutz was working on a rebodied GTO. I wonder if this design shared anything.

  7. It would have been interesting to see what the actual production version would look like. Probably watered down where it would lose the uniqueness of the concept, as most concepts to production end up doing. Some concepts don’t make it to production at all. Look at the Cadillac concepts for example. Great stunning concepts but just elements make it to the production model.

  8. Always wished they just brought Pontiac cars over to Buick and had done the Holden experiment there… The old ATS platform even that the Camaro was on could’ve sprouted Buicks. Well I guess ultimately wished we still had Pontiac.

  9. After 36 years for GM Canada(1965-2002) my heart is still with #1 Pontiac #2 Olsmobile. Even if GM forces me to drive a Buick. You got to stay with the big family. My first car, bought in 1965, was a Pontiac Parisienne 1962.

  10. Bring back Pontiac as an EV performance brand! With zero SUVS or Crossovers.

    1. Not sure if I would want Pontiac to be EV only, or ICE only for that matter. As for zero SUVs or crossovers, I dunno based on the Stinger and Rageous concepts which if updated to current styling trends and tech could attract a lot of interest. Likewise I can see a Banshee EV high performance two seater and a GTO hybrid sports coupe.

      1. Looks like a cross between a Saturn Sky rear, and a first gen Buick Lacrosse. Very well may have been an attempt to make a sister vehicle for the Aviner Concept. Die hard Pontiac fan, but that would have flopped!

        2. As is yes its too way out there and would have to be significantly toned down for production. That front end would have to be worked on as it’s pretty scary looking.

  11. They’re gonna bring Pontiac back, first the covert ad in Car & Driver they claim to know nothing about, and then little tidbits like this suddenly. Expecting a niche brand ala Hummer that’ll be sold at GMC dealers who use to sell Pontiac.

    Edit: Also, I’d buy this.

  12. Fun to wonder “what if.” The black in the illustration definitely looks better than the white. Maybe they were looking to make the contrasting seat option really stand out. The rear end reminds me a lot of a stretched Solstice combined with a Saturn Aura.

  13. Interesting — another case of the good stuff left on the cutting room floor? GM could start a whole division recycling all of its designs that never saw the light of day.

  15. Interesting that GM is just now showing this to us. Perhaps we can one day have Pontiac make a return. Probably not until sedans, wagons and couples make a return though
