Last year, GM Authority reported that General Motors wasn’t included in a top 10 list of the most American-made vehicles, which may come as a surprise given The General’s global headquarters is situated in Detroit, Michigan. In keeping with this theme, GM once again failed to crack the top-10 list for the 2024 model year, while Tesla continued to dominate.
According to a report from Cars.com, the 10 most-American cars included three Teslas, three Hondas, and a single Volkswagen, Toyota, Jeep and Lexus product each. As for the Detroit-based automaker, its three most American-made offerings included the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon at 23rd and 24th, respectively, and the Corvette at 34th. These rankings make for some interesting comparisons, where a Kia Sorento is technically more American-made than a Corvette, as well as a BMW X4 with more American-ness than a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra.
It’s worth noting that this list concentrates on U.S. content and assembly, as America is technically an entire content.
Interestingly, Cars.com uses several disqualifying factors when articulating rankings, including:
- Models with a gross vehicle weight rating above 8,500 pounds – mostly full-size vans, three-quarter- and one-ton pickup trucks, and larger commercial vehicles – which are exempt from AALA requirements.
- Models from automakers that build fewer than 1,000 cars in a given model year. Such cars are exempt from certain AALA requirements.
- Models set for imminent discontinuation, or production moving outside the U.S., without a clear U.S.-built successor.
- Models not yet on sale at the time of the study (in this case, spring 2024) even if they’re from the current model year.
- Models intended solely for government or commercial fleets.
- Models that don’t meet minimum sales or inventory thresholds.
- Models for which Cars.com cannot verify sufficient information from automakers, dealership audits, inventory and government records.
Notably, the above disqualifications knocked several GM vehicles off the top 100 list, including the Cadillac CT4, Chevy Silverado HD, and GMC Hummer EV.

If it’s not going as you guys would like, why don’t you just stop producing the Colorado. Just like you did with the Camaro. If you CANT BEAT THEM, JUST WALK AWAY. Seem to be the GM Way. At least the MUSTANG keeps going and has forged a name for itself where as the Camaro has be canned twice. No wonder your sales are going down, the public won’t buy something when they think, oh hang on GM might shelve this soon because it’s not giving them ALL THE MONEY THEY WANT. NO LONGEVITY. WE would rather produce what we want, NOT WHAT THE PUBLIC WANTS.
Very questionable list. The VW ID.4 at #3 and ahead of every ICE Honda except one? Gladiator at #8? Colorado and Canyon right next to each other at 23 and 24? F-150 Hybrid being ahead of the F-150, and the latter at 58?
While I do praise Tesla for their top spot, I don’t however get how they go about getting the top spot. These electric cars are more batteries than anything and battery components regardless if they are manufactured here are still sourced from China. Is there a loophole here I am not seeing?
Tesla batteries are made in Texas, not China. The source was Japan (Panasonic).
Most on Teslas batteries are made in Nevada by Panasonic.
But aren’t the materials (metals) still sourced from China? There’s all this talk how they have full dominance on the supply chain for EVs and how a transition to EVs is essentially taking us from dependence on Saudi oil to dependence on Chinese lithium and processing of that lithium.
Possibly now, but large lithium deposits have been found in at least a couple of places in the U.S.
That’s going to get interesting. Apparently at least one of the lithium sites is on American Indian land and they don’t seem too excited about having a lithium mine in that area.
They should take a gamble on it. 😉
Chevrolet Trax – 3% US content
Honda Pilot – 52% US content
Chevrolet dealerships are so embarrassed by the lack of US content on the Trax that they have removed the content sticker on the window. Go to any Chevrolet dealership I would wager that you won’t see the content sticker anywhere on the Trax.
Lol maybe the content sticker is part of the 3% made in US content.
Disgraceful. Barra and company should be ashamed.
Interesting. I wonder if they have been doing the same with Buick Envision window stickers. May not be proud of the location of final assembly.
