SVG Takes No. 97 Xfinity NASCAR Chevy To Win At Portland 2024: Video

Shane Van Gisbergen, Australian Supercars legend-turned-Xfinity Series racer, found Victory Lane at Portland International Raceway on June 1st, 2024. It’s the first time the No. 97 Chevy Camaro SS has won, while it’s Van Gisbergen’s second win in a NASCAR national division, following his victory on the Chicago street course in the Cup Series last year, proving that he’s right at home in American stock car racing.

Van Gisbergen – also known by his initials, SVG – fought hard to win on the 1.967-mile road course in Oregon. He led early in the race, but couldn’t quite get his NASCAR Chevy race car to behave on restarts. However, he bounced back from a few miscues during the race, muscling his way steadily forward until he was back up front. In fact, he passed the No. 7 Camaro of Justin Allgaier with four laps left, pulling away to solidify his win.

“What a day, really cool, had some great racing,” said van Gisbergen. “I need to get better on my restarts and learn how to position, but that was so much fun. Really cool racing. I love these cars, they’re great.”
Van Gisbergen celebrated by signing a rugby ball and punting it into the grandstands for the fans after winning. Meanwhile, Allgaier wound up second, but was heartbroken about his result.
“I don’t know [what I could have done differently],” he said. “On those restarts we were so free taking off and the car was just struggling to get grip.”
He added, “I think that’s the hardest part, once he got by me there, I probably overdrove it trying to get back to him and probably didn’t help my cause any. Really proud of this team. All the effort this team puts forward is incredible. To come in second two years in a row stings a little bit but at the same time, really proud of everybody.”
Sammy Smith’s No. 8 Camaro finished third, followed by AJ Allmendinger’s No. 16 Camaro in fourth, while the No. 24 Toyota TRD Supra of Ed Jones rounded out the top five.

  1. SVG knows how to drive a road course. Great fun to watch. I hope to see more supercar drivers competing here soon. It’ll make life interesting for the traditional nascar drivers.

  2. Shane van Gisbergen is one of the best drivers in the world. I hope to see him dominate Xfinity soon, then on to the Cup series to have an incredible career. I fully support him and he is such a great guy too.
He’s from New Zealand by the way, even though the article doesn’t mention that.

  3. S.V.G. is really enjoying himself here in the states racing every week, some times even doing the double, cup race a well, in Australia they only race once a month, and that is only for an hour, anymore than one hour they have to have a second driver while the main driver has a nap. Plus over there they have strange rules, a guy sits in a glass box and issues five of ten second penalties if you cut in front of a driver in the pits, or touch another car on the track, if they saw our bash and crashing in the pits, bump and run and paybacks, the guy in the glass box would have a cardiac arrest, or drivers would accumulate that much time penalties, they would not be allowed to drive for a year.
