Red Light Runner Destroys Chevy Equinox: Video

A short but brutal dashcam video published on Reddit shows a Sunday morning crash in which a black ninth-generation Honda Accord t-bones a white Chevy Equinox at an intersection, destroying it and sending it flying sideways off the road.

According to the original poster as well as video time stamps, the red light runner struck the Chevy Equinox at 7:53 AM Eastern time on June 2nd, 2024, at the start of what would become a hot, sunny day.

The Honda Accord about to hit the Chevy Equinox.

The video opens with the Chevy Equinox in the center lane, what appears to be a Jeep Cherokee from the KL generation in the left-turn lane, and the right-turn lane empty. The Equinox faces an intersection as the traffic light turns green. The Equinox moves forward as the Cherokee begins its left turn.

Unfortunately for the Equinox driver, the Cherokee masks the oncoming Honda Accord from the driver’s view for a critical second or two. The Jeep driver applies the brakes and stops partway through their turn, a split second before the Accord blasts past the Cherokee’s nose and slams full speed into the driver’s side door of the Chevy Equinox.

The crash of the Honda Accord and Chevy Equinox.

Some Redditers estimate the impact to have occurred at 50 to 60 mph based on the number of milliseconds it takes the Accord to cross the intersection in the video. The impact lifts the Honda’s rear wheels and the whole Equinox off the ground. The unfortunate Equinox is thrown sideways and spun out of the intersection and up onto the grass of the shoulder.

The force of the crash causes the Honda Accord’s rear bumper to come off, scattering debris across the road. The Accord strikes a Toyota sedan waiting at the red light, though with much less force. After several seconds, with smoke pouring out from under the Accord’s crumpled hood, the Honda’s driver can be seen emerging from the vehicle and walking toward the Chevy Equinox.

When the video ends, several other people from another car can also be seen running across the road to check on the accident. Some posters under the video claim the driver of the Equinox, an elderly man, was hospitalized in critical condition but provide no supporting links.

The original poster’s statements say the accident took place in Hamilton, New Jersey. Google Maps, combined with street signs and the Aldi supermarket visible in the background, place the accident at the junction between NJ-33 and Whitehorse-Hamilton Square Road in Hamilton Township, with the Chevy Equinox northbound when it was struck.

  4. In most “entitlement” cases, the person is driving a much nicer vehicle than a Honda. This is probably someone distracted by a cellphone, then slamming on the gas pedal when they look up to see the yellow light, not realizing it’s been yellow awhile… because they were too busy looking at their phone. I always look left and right at every intersection I come up to anymore, especially when the light has just turned green for me. I’ve also taught my kids to do the same and show them videos like this when they ask “why?”
