Poll: What Is The Ultimate GM Dad Car?

Happy Father’s Day! Even if you’re reading this on your phone to avoid talking to your in-laws, we’re glad you’re here. To celebrate this special day, we want to know what you think the ultimate GM dad car is in 2024. If money were no object, which new car would you buy for your dad as a Father’s Day gift?

Here are the options decided by GM Authority’s distinguished editorial board. To keep the list balanced, we’ve chosen two vehicles from each of the four GM brands in the U.S. Of course, if you think there’s a GM product we missed that belongs on this list, let us know in the comments.

Chevy Corvette

Chevy Corvette: The Chevy Corvette has been the undisputed king of dad cars for the better part of a century. The current-gen C8 retains that status with the blend of performance and luxury the nameplate is famous for, all with pricing that’s still Social Security friendly. It’s as at home on the track as it is in the Denny’s parking lot.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2

Chevy Silverado 1500: Whether he wants a truck for hunting, fishing, towing, or just Home Depot runs, dads always think of a way to justify why they need to drive a full-size pickup 365 days a year. If your dad is a truck guy, he can’t go wrong with a Chevy Silverado. Maybe he’s a purist who wants a single cab and a long bed or a rugged outdoorsman who could benefit from the Trail Boss or ZR2. Every dad can find something to like in the Silverado lineup.

Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

Cadillac CT5: Do you have the kind of dad who complains about the ubiquity of crossovers these days? Does he still talk about his old Roadmaster or Sedan DeVille and opine that they don’t make ’em like they used to? Enter the Cadillac CT5, the car that most faithfully carries the torch of the American luxury sedan. With a roomy, upscale interior, high-performance V-Series models, and just the fact that it has four doors and a trunk, the CT5 is a good, traditional dad car.

Cadillac Lyriq

Cadillac Lyriq: Now, we know a lot of dads are skeptical of EVs, but hear us out. Maybe your dad is a techy. Maybe he always gets the new iPhone the day it drops. For the dad who prefers the latest tech over the loudest exhaust, the Cadillac Lyriq is one of the best options. Also, dads love tax breaks, and the Lyriq qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

GMC Hummer EV

GMC Hummer EV: The GMC Hummer EV is pretty transparently an EV designed to appeal to people who don’t like EVs. Available as a pickup or an SUV, the macho Hummer EV is another electric vehicle that could be the one that makes your dad go electric.

GMC Yukon

GMC Yukon: Full-size SUVs have been a favorite of dads for decades, and GM dominates the segment. The GMC Yukon, available in two wheelbases and a nice variety of trims, is for the dad who wants a 3-row vehicle that can take the whole family to the lake with a boat in tow without breaking a sweat.

Buick Enclave

Buick Enclave: The Buick Enclave is a crossover for dads who think they’re too cool for minivans. The Enclave has long served as an excellent minivan alternative with a cavernous cabin containing a third row and cargo hold you can actually use. Of course, being a Buick, it’s also on the more premium side of its class.

Buick Envista

Buick Envista: Some dads love a good bargain. The Buick Envista is a stylish, practical, and affordable crossover for the sensible dad. Perhaps an empty-nester who doesn’t need a ton of interior space anymore. This is a car that dad can brag on the golf course about how little he spent on it.

So, what will it be? After brunch with your dad on Sunday, which car are you buying him on Monday?

    1. I love my tuned 2018 Sierra 1500 Denali with a 6.2L. It gets over 20 mpgs if driven respectful Hauls the boat, atv, kids, wife, and myself. And it hauls pretty good @$$ for a naturally aspirated truck.

    2. The Suburban does it all. Except, haul loose mulch but my utility trailer takes care of that. I owned a truck before my Suburban. I don’t think I will ever go back to truck! Plus, the grandkids are much happier with the extra room!

  17. I’m a GM dad, been one since my ‘63 SS409, then 67 SS 427 Impala. Since then it’s been Silverados, then the last 5 generations of Suburbans. The only time I’ve strayed from GM was way back when I bought an ‘89 Lincoln Mark VII LSC. I have to say, it was an excellent vehicle.

  20. I like the Suburban too! I still own my 1970 Monte Carlo from my first year in college, I have owned this Monte Carlo for 50 years. My daily driver is a 2001 Tahoe that is the trip vehicle and the around town car is a 2024 Equinox that my wife drives.

  21. Chevy Bolt. Please hear me out…
1: My Dad is retired and doesn’t drive very far anymore. Short trips are great for an electric vehicle. Many short stops and starts don’t wear our the engine or the starter.
2: No need to warm up the car to get the oil purged of accumulated blow-by gasses.
3: No major maintenance worries – No oil changes. Tires will get too old before they wear out with miles. Brakes are regenerative and will likely never wear out with Dad’s driving style.
4: Small, easy to drive and park vehicle. (Fender bender avoidance)
5: Less expensive vehicle is easier on a fixed income (no high dollar EV’s, luxury cars, large trucks nor large SUVs).
6: Less expensive vehicle is less on insurance (I compared a 2023 Bolt to a 2023 Equinox and they are annually within $50).
7: 5-star crash rating just in case something goes wrong.
8: The Bolt has a high seating position and large enough doors to make entry and exit easy. NOTE: the Bolt has a low part on the sill so that sliding legs in from outside is easier, which is brilliant for people with mobility issues.
9: Dad doesn’t have to deal with gas stations any more. Just plug-it in when he gets home.

I know there are haters of all things EV, but this really is a good example of a great solution for a senior.
