General Motors will stop producing the Chevy D-Max at the GM OBB plant in Ecuador on August 31st, when it will officially end its manufacturing operations in the country. However, the company is preparing a new 2025 Chevy D-Max as a replacement for the successful midsize pickup.
The automaker’s top representative in Ecuador revealed to El Universo that GM is preparing a new pickup model for the South American country that it will call the 2025 Chevy D-Max, to continue the legacy of the highly popular nameplate that has been the best-selling vehicle in the local market for several consecutive years. In fact, the new 2025 D-Max is currently undergoing testing in Ecuadorian territory.
“We are in the testing phase of another pickup truck that will take the place of the D-Max in the Chevrolet portfolio, which will be in the same price range and offer the same quality and availability of spare parts,” said Commercial Director of Chevrolet Ecuador, Renato Silva. “The name D-Max is registered in Ecuador by General Motors. The intention is to call the pickup truck that will replace the current one the New D-Max,” he added.
Remarkably, Ecuador is the only country in the world where the second-generation Chevy D-Max pickup is still produced and sold. Although the D-Max name comes from the original model developed jointly by GM and Isuzu under the companies’ defunct truck deal, the American company intends to continue using the badge in Ecuador due to its high level of commercial success and because the name legally belongs to it in that country.
The Commercial Director of Chevrolet Ecuador announced that the new 2025 Chevy D-Max will be a different model, but with similar focus and characteristics to the current model, positioned as a base work-focused pickup. GM currently has two models that could maintain the D-Max formula in the Ecuadorian market, the base variants of the Brazilian Chevy S10 and the Chinese-made Chevy S10 Max sold in Mexico.
The new 2025 Chevy D-Max for Ecuador will be officially presented in January 2025 and it’s unclear where it will be imported from, but it promises to be larger and maintain leadership of the Ecuadorian market. “The model that will replace the D-Max will be a little bigger, will have better technology and will be offered with a very similar mechanical range. That is why we trust that the sales volumes we currently have will be maintained,” the executive concluded.
