NASCAR Chevy Teams Have Lackluster New Hampshire Race: Video

New Hampshire Motor Speedway was plagued with bad weather on June 23rd, 2024. Rain drenched the track with just over 80 laps left, but NASCAR stuck it out, waiting for over two hours for the rain to stop before slapping wet-weather tires on the race cars for the final stint, which produced some interesting racing. Through it all, things didn’t go exactly the way the NASCAR Chevy teams hoped, leaving New Hampshire without much to show for it.

Kyle Busch had a rough go of things on Sunday. His No. 8 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 sustained light damage after an incident early in the race, and he waited out the two-hour red flag with intent to turn his day around. Under caution, however, his race car simply had enough, and he lost grip on the wet-weather tires and slammed the wall. This time, the damage proved too significant to overcome, and he retired from the race, ultimately finishing 35th.

“We worked our way back into the lead lap and thought we could pick up a few more spots but unfortunately we hit the wall under caution on wets just before coming back to green after the rain delay and weren’t able to finish,” Busch said. “We’ll take the FICO Chevy back to the shop to evaluate what happened and how we can improve on our New Hampshire package.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 NASCAR Chevy, looked like he had a shot to win, but his run was cut short after contact with a competitor. After starting on the pole and leading 43 laps, Elliott was taken out by Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, who could not turn and crashed into Elliott’s race car. Elliott finished 18th.

Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Toyota TRD Tundra went on to win, followed by Chase Briscoe’s No. 14 Mustang and Josh Berry’s No. 4 Mustang in second and third, respectively. Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Camaro, led The Bow Tie brand’s efforts, finishing fourth in the wild race. All told, there were 14 caution periods, accounting for 84 laps of the scheduled distance.
