Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Combined GMC Yukon sales, those of the Yukon and Yukon XL, placed the duo in third behind the Ford Expedition in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during Q1 2024 when ranked by sales volume. It slipped from its second-place showing it gained over two years ago and has maintained ever since, even as recently as the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the Yukon’s corporate cousins that share the same architecture, continue to lead the segment on a combined basis, as has been the case for two decades, while posting a 20 percent decrease in sales to 33,008 units. Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) took the top spot again, with a 14 percent dip in sales to 23,324 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes cumulative sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed with an 11 percent bump to 21,560 units. Notably, the Tahoe alone bested sales of both Expedition variants combined. Sales of the regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales) and the extended-length Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales) are combined this quarter, with the SUV family posting a cumulative nine percent slip to 18,013 units. The Jeep Wagoneer, comprised of both the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the Grand Wagoneer), was next with a 136 percent leap in sales for 13,131 deliveries as the newest model here continues to gain traction in the marketplace. The extended-length Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) saw a 30 percent slide in sales to 9,684 units. The redesigned Toyota Sequoia was next with a 36 percent upswing to 5,958 units, while the Nissan Armada rounded out the list with a 45 percent dive for 3,977 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take
For the first time in over two years, sales of the GMC Yukon duo saw it fall behind its crosstown rival, the Ford Expedition family. However, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo continue to lead the mainstream full-size SUV segment, and combining sales of GMC and Chevy SUVs still enabled GM to account for over half of all sales here.
While competitors have previously launched new and updated models, faring better than GM’s entries to start out the year, a refresh of The General’s offerings is set to arrive for the 2025 model year to take them on.
These updates from GMC and Chevy should boost sales and strengthen GM’s command of the lucrative full-size SUV segment.
About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL
The 2024 GMC Yukon drops the Redwood Metallic paint color and adds three new paint colors to the lineup, while the 2024 Yukon Denali Ultimate will offer two new wheel options as part of a small number of changes, updates, and new features. Check out what’s new and different for the 2024 Yukon and Yukon XL.
The refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon, arriving later this year, boasts a long list of upgrades and changes. These include new front and rear fascias, 5G network connectivity, and a huge screen that mirrors the same infotainment layout as the upcoming first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV and all-new 2024 GMC Acadia – a 15-inch infotainment display and an 11-inch driver information screen.
Also, for 2025, the GMC Yukon AT4 will finally get a diesel engine option for the first time, featuring the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine.
As before, the 2025 Yukon will continue to offer two gasoline engine options: the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 and the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87, with engine availability dependent on the trim level selected.
Recently, GM revealed a glimpse of the refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon, hinting at its impending debut, though GM Authority has secured spy images of the SUV in full view for the premium Denali trim, the range-topping Denali Ultimate trim, and the off-road-oriented AT4 trim before you’re supposed to see it.
Here’s what we know and expect for the 2025 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.
Production of the 2025 Yukon and Yukon XL is scheduled for October 7th.

That Hyundai grille doesn’t help…
i said it 1 year ago. this is what will happen to all of these (i call em tahoes to cover all derivatives) once the housewives get theirs and husbands dont have more money to replace it 1 year later…
im not a prophet. i just know who buys these 95% of the time :)))
gm does too but keeps pretending that isnt a problem
There’s also significantly more Expedition inventory, with incentives, so that’s part of it. Combine that with the fact that many current GM owners know a refresh is on the way, it makes sense.
ive also said before the refresh is not a factor. we will revisit this in a year with the proof
Higher interest rates, high % of buyers already got their $60 to $85K SUV;’s ( and many upside down after having to have them at MSRP or worse). GM cash cow on these and expensive full size pickup bubble about to burst without real $ on the hood.
Plus they dropped the lower trim level. (Here in Canada). Not sure about the U.S.
gm doesn’t seem to mind losing sales
Greed! Priced themselves out of the market. Average customer cannot afford these prices!
Also now the Acadia Denali and Traverse RS are cutting into full size sales as you can save 25k !
Q1 ’24 share for the Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban was 53%, the same as Q1 ’23 share. Combined sales were 47,727 and 57,660 respectively. The 9% decrease in the headline is misleading because Yukon XL sales were not reported in Q1 ’24…it doesn’t mean none were sold. And as noted, GM has been #1 in full size SUVs for over 20 years, just like they’ve been with the Escalade for full size luxury SUVs.
In any case, the data does not support some of the comments.
