General Motors’ all-electric rival Rivian has officially unveiled the second-generation Rivian R1S and R1T, which represent a thorough reengineering of its flagship models.
The all-new Rivian R1S SUV and R1T Pickup are likely to debut for the 2025 model year. They have been completely overhauled with performance upgrades, hundreds of hardware improvements, a fully revamped software experience, and evolved drive systems while maintaining very similar exterior designs as the first-gen models.
“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise,” Rivian CEO and Founder RJ Scaringe claimed in a prepared statement. “Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date.”
Starting off with the fun stuff, the new R1 platform now features a Tri-Motor or Quad-Motor setup designed and built by Rivian itself. Maximum output is 1,025 horsepower, which enables a 0-60 mph sprint in less than 2.5 seconds. Notably, a Rivian-built Dual-Motor drivetrain is also on offer.
The batteries boast redesigned modules and more efficient packaging for easier manufacturing and servicing. Maximum range figures now sit at an estimated 420 miles on a full charge, along with a valve-focused battery pack that boasts an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles from a full charge.
Moving to the technology side, the second-gen R1 platform now utilizes a fresh electrical architecture and compute platform that maximizes efficiency. In the camera department, the all-new in-house Rivian Autonomy Platform offers 360-degree visibility and is ten times more powerful than the systems it replaces. Equipped on all R1S and R1T models as a standard affair, a premium version dubbed Rivian Autonomy Platform+ features even more capabilities.
Interestingly, the headlights and taillamps have also been updated for safety purposes.
Some additional goodies include digital keys, a Rivian-developed sound system, a Connect+ subscription service that allows for video streaming, Dynamic Glass Roof, two new premium Ascend trims, the Storm Blue exterior paint, and blackout trim options.
Pricing for the R1T starts at $69,900, while the R1S boasts a starting MSRP of $75,900. Deliveries are set to begin immediately.
This extensive redesign positions the two Rivian electric vehicles as more direct rivals to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. Maximum power ratings for The General’s two all-electric behemoths stand at 1,000 horsepower in the Hummer EV Pickup and 830 in the Hummer EV SUV. Maximum range estimates sit at 314 miles on a full charge. Meanwhile, 2024 model year pricing for the former starts at $98,845 and $80,395 for the latter, making for some stark differences between the two automaker’s offerings. However, upgrading the powertrain and trim levels of the Rivian R1 models quickly makes them overlap the Hummer’s pricing.
It’s worth noting that the unveiling of the second-gen R1S and R1T could be one of the reasons why Rivian has been slashing prices on R1 models in existing inventory.

Cheaper the Sliverado ev and close to lighting . This is ev truck to get. Still very expensive though . I’d get this one though
The Silverado charges faster, much faster than them and has over 150 miles more real world range. Stay away
They are all powerful enough. Focus on range, that’s what is the stumbling block for consumers.
