The all-new 2024 GMC Acadia made its formal debut last year, ushering in the crossover’s latest third generation. Compared to the preceding second-gen model, the 2024 GMC Acadia is longer, wider, and taller, with 80 percent more cargo room available behind the third-row seat. Presently, seating capacity is capped at seven passengers. Now, however, it looks like GM is considering upping that capacity by one, which could make the Acadia an even more attractive option for larger families.
According to sources familiar with the matter, who spoke exclusively to GM Authority, General Motors is now considering an eight-passenger seating configuration for the latest third-generation Acadia. Currently, the Acadia crossover offers seating for seven as standard on all three trim levels. The current seating arrangement includes two seats up front, two captain’s chairs for the second row, and a third-row bench seat with a 60/40 split for added practicality.
For the moment, the only three-row crossover in GM’s lineup (Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia) to offer eight-passenger seating is the Chevy Traverse. A second-row bench seat is included as standard on the Chevy Traverse LS, which is the only Traverse trim level to offer eight-passenger seating.
Previously, the 2023 Acadia incorporated a six-passenger seating arrangement as standard, with a seven-passenger layout offered as optional. Between 2017 and 2021, the Acadia crossover also offered a five-passenger seating layout as optional.
When comparing the exterior dimensions of the third-gen Acadia to those of the second-gen crossover, the third-gen Acadia is 10.6 inches longer in terms of overall length, 8.4 inches longer in terms of wheelbase, and 3.2 inches taller.
As a reminder, the third-gen Acadia cradles the turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine as standard, rated at 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, with the GM C1 platform providing the underpinnings. Production takes place at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan.

Blows my mind that they make these big SUV’s with Captain Chairs in the second row, you have to have the 3rd row up to carry over 4 people, you can haul 5 people and almost as much cargo in a Blazer.
What is the point of have a vehicle that big without a bench seat!
I had a 1984 Oldsmobile with two bench seats. The middle passengers were not comfortable, since they cannot rest their arms except on their laps. So GM is doing it better now.
Thanks for the update Doc. Brown.
The center seat is not a seat often used but is great for car-seats and provides much more “utility” if you can seat 5 AND carry significant cargo, just like you do in your 1984 Oldsmobile.
I’m surprised they don’t offer them already, I wonder if the captains chairs sold really well for the previous gens so they decided to remove the bench
A second row bench seat would be so much better; I really disliked the captains chairs in my Cadillac XT6.
The XT6 can be optioned with a bench seat in the second row.
this would be awesome!
Crazy to see people want the bench seat for a +1 lol. These vehicles seat 7 regularly and 8 at lower trims or optioned. One minute, the bench seat wasn’t needed and now you guys are crying for it to come back lol just wow
Crossing my fingers in the hopes that GMC will one day reconsider bringing back as an option a six cylinder engine in the upcoming 2025 Acadia!
My sentiments exactly. Not an expert by any means but as a consumer I feel the V6 should be available.
Highly prefer a bench seat option in all trim levels. There is an integrated arm test in the middle of the bench seat that can be tucked into the seat. 5 passengers and a lot of “stuff” or 8 with a little. The captains chairs only allow 4 passengers while bringing “stuff”. Please add the bench seat in all trim levels! Have a ’20 Acadia and wish it had a 2nd row bench!!
When they first announced the new Acadia they said the Elevation trim would be available with 8 seats. They quietly dropped it when the vehicle was actually released.
Is there any information on when they will release the 8 seater? I am about to pull the trigger on a Traverse but liked the Acadia better.
Wonder if they are still the same POS as last years model. I’ve never been so disappointed in a new vehicle purchase in my life. Next time I’ll buy a Toyota or Mazda
I have no use for a bench seat however it should be an option. Just like the 6 cylinder engine. I also that only 3 levels is unfair. I don’t want an AT4 however there are things not available on the elevation that are on the AT4. So you try and force me into the Denali.
I have an 8 passenger 2015 Denali and was excited to see the 2024 and 2025 would be even lager than my 2015. I was hoping to upgrade but I want another 8 passenger Denali and do NOT want captain chairs. I also was a little disappointed that the v6 was not available on the larger vehicle. Wonder who makes these decisions.
