GM Car Sales Down 18 Percent Moving 50K Units During Q1 2024

GM car sales, which in the U.S. include the Chevy Camaro, Corvette, and Malibu, along with the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, decreased in the United States and Canada during the first quarter of 2024. However, GM car sales increased in Mexico, where Chevy is the only GM brand that sells cars.

GM sells just five "traditional" cars at this time. Shown here is the 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray 108th Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.

In the U.S., the Corvette posted the only sales gain. However, volume-wise, the Malibu is by far GM’s sales leader, accounting for two-thirds of car sales at a 66 percent share. That comes as no surprise since it’s the only non-luxury sedan offered by GM in the U.S. and the only sedan currently on sale from the Bow Tie brand.

While the Malibu, Camaro, Corvette, CT4, and CT5 all fall directly within GM’s car category, we can argue that the term “car” also describes other types of vehicles. Specifically, that could extend the definition of “car” to unibody crossovers and unibody pickups (though GM doesn’t sell the latter in North America) since they use the same integral body structure as cars, albeit with a different body style that calls for a higher hip point and higher roof height.

Many analysts and industry observers agree, already defining “car” to include traditional cars like sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, coupes, and convertibles, as well as unibody crossovers and pickups. Expanding the definition of “car” to include all GM unibody vehicles sold by Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac shows that sales were nearly flat for 302,829 deliveries. Furthermore, traditional cars accounted for 16 percent or about a sixth of GM’s overall unibody vehicle sales.

Four of the top five GM unibody cars are all sold by the Bow Tie brand, with the Chevy Equinox again leading the way with 54,185 deliveries, followed by the Chevy Trax, Malibu, and Chevy Trailblazer. The GMC Terrain takes the fifth spot. These five models alone accounted for over half, or 53 percent, of all GM unibody sales.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox

Chevy even commanded GM unibody sales overall, making up two-thirds, or 67 percent, of all unibody deliveries, while Buick accounted for 15 percent, GMC 10 percent, and Cadillac nine percent. (Rounded figures actually total 101 percent in this case.)

  1. Given the sales numbers of all the individual Chevy models, it looks like a big mistake for GM to kill off the Malibu rather than updating it. Where are they going to get the extra 30,000 sales from???

    Reply
    1. BEK: Exactly. But there’s more to that story than what meets the eye. If you take ALL of GM’s SUV/CUV’s, there’s only two that outsell the Malibu so far this year: Equinox and Trax. Of course, the Trax is brand new and as is normally the case, the newest sells well AND it’s the lowest priced GM vehicle you can buy today. In fact, the highest level Trax is about the same price as the LS (base model) Malibu. But going back to the sales of them all and what’s not really seen is just how much they (GM) push the SUV’s. You can’t turn on the TV without seeing a Chevy advertisement pushing the Silverado, Equinox, Trax and so on. At least where I live, you never EVER see anything for the Malibu. What’s more, you walk onto a Chevy lot and you see rows of trucks and SUV’s as far as the eye can see. If that same dealer even has a Malibu, it’s normally parked in the far back area where you would need to search for it. Lastly, ask anyone in those same Chevy stores about a Silverado or Equinox and they are on it. Ask them about the Malibu and you will be lucky if they even look at you.

Just imagine what would happen if GM cared about sedans? If they cared enough to promote and advertise them? If the dealers cared enough to stock them (if they can even get them)? And finally, if they did stock them in any quantity, if the sales staff cared? I know, a lot of if’s. But if they did these things, the Malibu would most likely outsell them all but the Silverado.

      Reply
      1. It has nothing to do with pushing, or interest, or stock or sales guys caring; it is 100% because of the landscape. People are moving away from sedans. The Accord has been losing sales every year, same with the Camry and all the others. That is with other manufacturers leaving and they aren’t even picking up those sales. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make enough or spread the cost out enough to share to be worth while.

I know we don’t look at sedans even though they look better they are a down grade in most other comparisons. A slight mpg and handling hit for improved visibility, comfort, room and storage. I can fit so much more in the Rav4 than a Camry. My 6’5 self can fit comfortably in back of a Rav4, less so in the Camry. I can slide in a Rav4 seat rather than plop down in a Camry. It is just a better all around vehicle for similar prices.

I had a friend that solely bought Accords, pointed her to look at CR-V, guess which one she bought? Two kids with activities, the CR-V was better across the board.

GM could have it run on every channel, it wouldn’t be the second best selling vehicle in their portfolio. Let it go man, just let it go!

        1. TMI: Too bad you are failing to see the bigger picture. But go ahead and keep telling yourself that sedans are dead. You drive a Rav4, so I already know what type of buyer you are. I’m in the auto business and have been for 28 years. You are drinking all the Kool-Aid you can and it’s showing. And the nice thing about living in a free country? I don’t have to let it go. I can talk about it all I wish thank you.

        2. If fewer companies are making sedans, that should help GM sell them. Subaru is, I believe, the only company that currently makes a station wagon, and does well doing so.

          Reply
          1. Kary: You would think so, but so many people are so brand loyal that they will forego buying another sedan and end up in an SUV/CUV even if they really didn’t want one.

I would say that I’m mostly GM brand loyal, but my next car will be that. A car (sedan or small car-based hatch). At this point, I don’t know if that will be Tesla (Model 3), VW (ID7), BMW (I4) or maybe even a BYD if they can sell here.

      2. Sedans are low margin and in an era where sub sells and investment dollars need to go into ev . Putting r and d into a new low margin sedan . I bet most of those sedans went out to fleet or almost no profit .

A couple of investor sites state that gm best chance at survival is to ditch almost all models except big pick ups and SUV’s and use oversized profits to fund a more aggressive ev research and development effort . The ultimum battery platform is outdated already.

In the era of ev , you need to develop and patent tech or you will buying it from someone else at a competitive disadvantage .

Current ev tech will result in cratering sales for all. Newer tech that does not catch fire and is much cheaper is needed . That needs much more investment

So you comment is totally pointless and stupid.

        Reply
      2. Escalades turn huge profit margin . Sedans don’t . In an era where most shoppers are not loyal to brand . The value of having an inexpensive sedan to one day upsell someone to an Escalade or loaded Silverado is zero .

The investment analyst believe that gm should use every dollar from profit margin to make transition to ev .

Any dollar spent on sedan for small margin is money not spent well .

An analogy . Should you have bought con Ed with 6% dividend or Nvidia in 2016 if you knew you would need to $800,000 to buy a modest house and you made $60k a year . You need the investment in the stock that is going to give the outsized return to finance the money loosing ev.

Gm spent a fortune on the ultimum platform knowing it will be outdated a few years after release . It keeps needing to put money into tech until tech is more mature to keep competitive . Chinese rivals are rolling out new ev tech on monthly basis . Keeps changing rapidly .

Any money to low margin sedan is money taken from ev.

Gm is in fight for survival .

Same analyst said gm should abandon Chinese market where it is loosing out to home grown rivals .

Gm survival is at stake . It may not be around in 15 years if it makes the wrong decisions . A new sedan is risky . Even more so since us spec sedan can’t be sold in many emerging markets because the markets are full of cheaper made vehicles .

        Reply
        1. James: You speak a lot of truth in your comment. And yet, I will flip your own words around here. You say “It may not be around in 15 years if it makes the wrong decisions”. Putting all your eggs in one basket is also a huge risk. The auto market is cyclical and has been from the start. At some point, we will see sedans, luxury coupes, convertibles and wagons come back. You have always had the issue where the next generation doesn’t want to drive what their parents or grandparents drove. Today’s generation (lets say the 8 to 28 year olds) have been mostly hauled around in huge SUV’s or crossovers. If for no other reason, this same group will mostly reject that same type of vehicle. Now, does that mean they will buy sedans? Maybe, maybe not. Lastly, you have a large number of people who just can’t afford these huge and over-priced SUV’s today. But they could afford to buy a 15 or 20 or 25 grand new car. Maybe it wouldn’t be the perfect vehicle for them now, but if GM can get these new and/or younger buyers in the showrooms with a Chevy Spark or Cruze or Malibu or some lower priced Buick sedan, then the chances of keeping that customer is greater and they will move up at some point. Who knows, maybe they would move up to those higher profit SUV’s everyone speaks of.

Bottom line, don’t put all those eggs in one basket. Ford has already done that sadly. GM isn’t much better and shame on them.

    1. Here I can agree with you if I’m understanding it. Not sure I do, but I think I do. So if I’m correct, you are saying that GM is stupid for killing off the sedans because nobody is cross shopping the much higher priced SUV’s from the sedans?

Please help me understand your comments.

  5. I wonder how many Equniox and Trax buyers would rather bought a newer model sedan if one was available instead of a small SUV? Loyal GM owners will buy whatever they are persuaded to buy regardless of what they truly want or need. Some buyers give second thought to purchasing vehicle models that are to be discontinued. Sales figures may reflect that to some degree.

    Reply
    1. Frank: Your point is solid. This is what so many don’t understand. You have the sheep (Toyota buyers) who will walk off a cliff if Toyota tells them to. They are so brand loyal that it goes beyond common sense. You have people who have been driving Ford products their entire life (same with Chevy, etc). So these same people purchase a new car every 4 or 5 years. They pull into the dealership, walk in and want to see the same car they have been in for years. These people have gone from LTD’s to Taurus and maybe Fusion. And now what? They either leave “their” brand for another sedan or they buy what the dealer is willing to sell.

I just love when people come on here and regurgitate the same lame stuff other say: That sedans/cars don’t sell and nobody wants them. But you can’t argue with facts. In 2023 there were +/- 4 MILLION cars sold in the USA. This consists of sedans, wagons, small hatches, coupe and convertible models. When you have approximately 1/3 of the total vehicles sold last year that fall under cars (not trucks or SUV’s), that is no small thing.

  9. Young single auto buyers want cars not SUVs. SUVs are not necessarily cool. Civics sell in droves to this group and Honda loyalty is legendary. So with one demographic ignored GM goes forward hoping to get lucky down the road with this demographic. Toyota and Honda owner loyalty which GM has given up on, will impact GM immensely.
