A new viral video captures the dramatic moment a Chevy Impala driver decides to flee from police and ends up T-boning a work van, leading to a chaotic scene. The Impala driver apparently had multiple warrants out for his arrest. The Chevy Impala ended up mangled and destroyed.
Per the video description, police officers in Mauston, Wisconsin responded to a call from a hotel about a guest who overstayed on a declined credit card. The suspect, who identified himself with a different name than used at check-in, is seen loading his Chevy Malibu with personal items, suggesting he is living out of his car. Body cam footage shows officers becoming suspicious when the man’s description did not match the Department of Transportation photograph associated with the name given. Further investigation revealed that the name used at check-in had several outstanding warrants.
As the situation escalates, additional officers arrive on the scene. When asked to step out of his vehicle, the suspect decides to flee, prompting officers to rush back to their patrol cars and initiate a pursuit.
The chase quickly intensifies, with the Chevy Impala reaching high speeds. At one point, the driver attempts a U-turn but is blocked by one of the pursuing officers, resulting in a collision that damages the front of the Impala. The driver then reverses into another police vehicle behind him, scattering debris across the road.
The pursuit continues until the Impala reaches a roundabout and T-bones a Mercedes cargo van, causing the van to flip onto its side. The video shows police officers quickly surrounding the Chevy Impala with guns drawn. One officer runs to check on the Mercedes driver, who fortunately appears unharmed.
The suspect was eventually apprehended and taken to county jail. The charges listed against him include reckless endangerment, eluding police, felony bail jumping, resisting an officer, and operating a vehicle on a revoked license.

IMHO, when the officer found out that he had multiple warrants, he should have used his vehicle to box the suspect’s car at the motel while the guy was parked. Then you get him out of the car. They had a second chance to box him when he backed into the Tahoe(?). Those two failures ended up endangering a lot of folks. Luckily the guy in the van wasn’t hurt. Hope he has uninsured motorist coverage.
Even if they had blocked the Impala at the motel, the perp might have backed up and headed out around the police vehicle. He was seeking to leave, one way or another. During the questioning, other police people and vehicles should have gotten closer into position should an escape be attempted, too. When he could/would not produce an ID, that’s when the vehicle should have been better blocked. It looked like that when they got the perp on the ground, NO officer was putting pressure on his back, which is good.
On a different “note”, this chase was graphic evidence why the 3.8L Impalas made such good police cars compared to the Crown Vics. Fast and tough.
