With the recent unveiling of the all-electric Junior crossover – which is currently unconfirmed for the United States market – Italian-based automaker Alfa Romeo is looking toward the future with another potential electric crossover that could arrive in 2027. Recent comments from Alfa’s CEO alluded that this possible model could be positioned as a rival to the Cadillac Lyriq.
According to a report from Autocar, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato discussed the future options the Italian-based automaker was exploring, including a bigger electric crossover to slot above the Stelvio. If it’s a class bigger than the Stelvio, that could put the next Alfa crossover in the same segment as the Lyriq. Notably, a final decision will be made before the end of the 2024 calendar year.
“The question is, do we go up [in size],” Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato remarked in a recent interview. “And for me, the answer is yes: we have to go up. We have everything – the platform, the engines, the software. We can push the limit to the max and I have some design sketches that are very good.”
The keyword in the quote above is “everything.” Autocar stated that this future Alfa Romeo crossover would ride on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, which implies that it will be electric. With that in mind, if it’s similar to the next-gen Dodge Charger, it’s possible that Alfa could offer all-electric and ICE-power variants of the same model.
In regard to the Lyriq itself, Caddy’s luxury crossover is only offered with an electric drivetrain, albeit in two distinct flavors. The Lyriq RWD features a single motor mounted on the rear axle that’s rated at 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, while the Lyriq AWD boasts a pair of electric motors – one per axle – and develops a combined 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Both models feature GM Ultium battery and GM Ultium Drive motor technologies.
Under the skin lies the GM BEV3 platform, while production takes place at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee.
