2025 GMC Terrain AT4 Caught Completely Uncovered: Photos

We’re still some time away from the debut of the overhauled 2025 GMC Terrain, but our spies have just caught a 2025 GMC Terrain AT4 prototype that’s completely devoid of any camouflage.

The front end design is on full display on this uncovered prototype. The top grille features a black insert and three horizontal bars finished in chrome, with the top most line encapsulating the GMC logo. Below the top grille, we see a smaller bottom grille with two horizontal slats and what appears to be a sensor, either for Adaptive Cruise Control or Super Cruise. Just above this grille is a piece of the front fascia, finished in black, that houses two red tow hooks. Wrapping the lower grille is a front skid plate that looks to be functional (as opposed to being for show purposes), joining forces with a high-clearance front bumper for better clearance and approach angles.

A front three quarter view of the 2025 GMC Terrain AT4 prototype.

Bookending the grille is a set headlights with GMC’s signature C-shaped Daytime Running Light (DRL) signature, which also serve as the turn signals and hazard indicators. The C-shaped signature wraps a set of vertically-stacked headlight lenses, with the top one likely being the low beam lens while the bottom one is likely for the high beam. Below that is a set of fog lights, inset into an extension of the black upper grille insert mentioned earlier. The front air curtain treatment is present and accounted for at the outside edges of the fog lights, helping to make the vehicle more slippery (and also quieter) by directing air thru the front fascia, as opposed to bouncing the air off the fascia.

The side profile reveals the general shape and rugged stance of the 2025 GMC Terrain AT4. The shape and belt line is a direct match for the Terrain’s platform mate, the 2025 Chevy Equinox. Our eyes tend to gravitate to the forward-leaning “shark fin” style C-pillar that seems to be similar as the same piece on new Equinox (though the part that meets the roof is treated slightly differently on the Terrain). Other Equinox similarities include the upward sloping belt line at the rear doors as well as the U-shaped wheel wells.

What’s not the same as the Equinox, however, are the marker lights placed at the upper end of the black fender flares – a treatment similar to that used on the 2023 and newer GMC Canyon. The wheel wells are filled with six spoke black wheels with silver spokes wrapping a set of General Grabber A/T Sport rubber, the same rubber used on the 2025 Equinox Activ. Piano black cladding spans the lower trim pieces of compact crossover SUV, including the lower fascias, fender flares,  and wheelbase trim.

The rear end of the 2025 GMC Terrain AT4 features a centrally-mounted comms fin, followed by a spoiler mounted on the rear hatch door, which also houses the Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL). The sides of the rear glass feature vertically-mounted aero curtains finished in piano black.

A set of boomerang-shaped tail lights with a visible C-shaped graphic bookend the rear end. Also note the vertically-oriented reflectors lower within the fascia. Look closely at the license plate cutout and you’ll see traces of a camouflage wrap that seems to have been recently removed.

The lower part of the rear end has a unique fascia comprised of a high-clearance rear bumper finished in black (to match the lower bumper at the front and the bottom trim at the side). A metallic-colored insert spans the width of the rear fascia, followed by what looks like an incomplete exhaust insert, giving us a good look at the independent rear suspension and exhaust routing. Turned toward the passenger side of the vehicle, the pipe is bent in a way to provide a high degree of approach and departure, though we have to wonder whether the production version will not have a more aesthetically pleasing finisher.

Overall, 2025 GMC Terrain AT4 certainly looks like a more serious off-road effort than the outgoing model, which is little more than an appearance package with some mild all-terrain tires.

Inside, the 2025 GMC Terrain will draw heavily on the 2024 GMC Acadia. An 11-inch Driver Information Center and a vertically oriented, portrait-style central infotainment display should be key interior features, mirroring the setup seen in the Acadia.

Under the hood, all 2025 Terrain models are expected to be powered by the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, paired with GM’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle will ride on an updated version of the GM D2 platform, offering both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options.

Production of the third-generation Terrain will take place at the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, though its start has been pushed back to October of 2024.

  1. They’ve spotted you! Abort! Abort!

In all seriousness, great pics. I’m not sure if piano black cladding is the best choice for an off-road trim (or for winter locales). Won’t that attract scratches? Secondarily, I wonder what those inserts are above the wheel wells. Reflectors? Something to do with the 360 degree camera? Style? The current Terrain does not have them.

    3. Well I mean everyone complains about unpainted, textured lower body trim used widely on CUV/SUVs. Please don’t complain about this car’s lack thereof.

  2. Reflectors/lights, like on the Canyon AT4.

    1. I think you’re right. Thank you.

  3. Anyone on here ever played the old PC game Space Invaders? This front end was 100% inspired by the aliens in that game.

  4. The black trim in the front face that connects the grille and the bumper fog lights(?) looks weird.

    1. agreed, rest of the car looks great besides that

    2. Thirded.

Completely unnecessary and makes the front too busy. Otherwise, looks great.

    3. And that back trim above the grille. Should have eliminated it, or at least lengthened it to made it connect to the rest of black trim and complete the cohesiveness.

  5. GM listened, for once! While the front end is predictable, the side profile is pure mini-me Acadia and looks great. They did away with the hideous current C/D area that is useless for visibility and now we have something far more mature. It’s a winner. Kudos!

    Getting really old.

  9. They did this one right. Looks good.

  10. Now… we just need GM’s PHEV technology already offered in China’s new Chevrolet Equinox Plus.

Its 177HP 1.5T engine is paired with a 188HP electric motor for a combined output of 365HP (272kW).

The 0-100 kph (62 mph) time comes in at just under 7 seconds, and the Activ trim offers an amazing 96 mile all-electric driving range!

I want this. How long will we have to wait?

    1. This looks good, but the above PHEV would be nice for performance. GM has moved away from engine choices for those who want a more power for a vehicle used at full capacity. Will this thing be a dog when loaded with 4 adults no less with added cargo? I appreciate good mpg but also loath driving a loaded vehicle that can’t get out of its own way.

  11. A little disappointing. They basically took the Equinox body and slapped GMC styling elements on it. At least with the previous generation they went through the trouble of making them distinct. You could easily tell them apart especially from the side profile; now, not the case.

    1. Yeah I notice it. Wanted to see more more styling variation between the Nox and the Terrain. But it still looks good and we are yet to see the Elevation and Denali trims.

    2. Yep totally – a step back in time when GM had models from the same platform that looked alike just with different front/tail ends. The old J-cars from the 1980’s Olds Firenza/Buick Skyhawk/Chevy Cavalier/Pontiac J2000 and let’s not forget the Cadillac Cimarron. It’s a shame GM decided to go this route with these stable mates.

    3. They are sharing the same hatch and doors , but everything else is unique to the GMC. While there are similarities in the rear quarter, and glass shape, they are different. Just not as unique as before.

  12. I am glad to say my Chicken Little/Sky Is Falling comments about tiny quarter glasses were unfounded. This is a darn good looking little CUV. *whew* GMC needs this now.

  13. I think the overall stance is the most reminiscent of the square S-10 Blazer/Jimmy of all the Terrains so far. I love that.

  14. Actually now that I study it some more, the C/D pillar area sort of harks back to the first-gen Terrain, with its prominent C-pillar (not exactly like the Equinox) and D-pillar blacked out, suggesting a seamless wrap of glass from the quarter into the back glass. Nice job there, as the first-gen looked good without being weird like the current, outgoing design.

  15. Not a fan. Too big size, No V6 and not really a off road vehicle.

    2. Why do you need an offroad vehicle? Do you offroad on your trips to Walmart and work? I have a 4-cyl GM turbo and it easily beats my previous Honda 3.5L V6. 1.5T GM engine is actually very decent.

  16. If it only comes in black interior like the current AT4 – FAIL
If it only comes with the underpowered 1.5l engine – FAIL
Would likely buy one if it has a PHEV option and a light colored interior.

  17. Nice looking CUV. However, if GM wants a REAL off road vehicle, develop a true Wrangler/Bronco competitor off a truck-based frame.

  21. Interior is an instant win – the best looking infotainment in its class. CRV and RAV4 interiors are both junk compared to this new Terrain. 1.5T is a great daily driver.
