2024 Chevy Blazer Drive Modes Explained

While it may not offer the same off-road prowess of the older models that bore the same nameplate, the current Chevy Blazer is a capable crossover in its own right, and offers a variety of drive modes to allow it to function in a plethora of driving situations. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the 2024 Chevy Blazer drive modes with the following explainer.

The 2024 Blazer is available with up to six drive modes, including Tour (FWD), Sport, All-Wheel Drive (AWD), Snow, Tow/Haul, and Off-Road. The Driver Mode Control knob is located on the center console and can be rotated to make a selection, while the selected mode’s icon will light up on the knob.

It’s worth noting that if the vehicle is in Tour (FWD) or AWD mode, it will stay in said mode through future on/off cycles. Meanwhile, if the Chevy Blazer is in any other mode, it will revert back to Tour (FWD) when restarted.

Side profile of 2024 Chevy Blazer.

Tour

Tour mode is used during normal Chevy Blazer driving conditions, sending engine power to the front wheels only. In fact, selecting this driving mode will allow the Bow Tie brand crossover to achieve the best fuel economy numbers.

Sport

Sport mode improves Blazer handling and acceleration on dry pavement. When activated, this mode modifies steering efforts, transmission shifting, AWD torque (when equipped), suspension tuning (when equipped), and StabiliTrak / Electronic Stability Control (ESC) settings. For vehicles equipped with AWD, choosing Sport mode also engages the all-wheel drivetrain.

AWD

AWD mode delivers torque to all four wheels. Selecting AWD will improve traction and control on slippery road surfaces, such as gravel, sand, wet pavement, snow, and ice. When in AWD mode, the AWD mode indicator will be on. This mode is active Sport, and Off-Road modes.

Snow

Snow mode improves Chevy Blazer acceleration on snow and ice covered roads by changing accelerator pedal response. Notably, it’s exclusive to FWD units.

Tow / Haul

Tow / Haul mode can assist when towing a heavy load. Use this mode to assist in maintaining desired vehicle speeds when driving on downhill grades by using the engine and transmission as a means of slowing the vehicle down. When active, Tow / Haul mode modifies transmission shifting, suspension tuning, steering effort, and Trailer Sway Control. For AWD vehicles, choosing Tow / Haul mode also engages the AWD system.

Off-Road

Off-road mode is used for off-road recreational driving. When active, Off-Road mode modifies accelerator pedal response, ABS, TCS, and the StabiliTrak / ESC system. Choosing Off-Road mode also engages AWD. In fact, this mode is exclusive to AWD models.

  1. A bit more detail on how exactly AWD mode works would be nice. Also, hard to believe snow mode only affects throttle response and not shifting and other elements (perhaps how AWD mode functions).

    1. affecting throttle response does affect shifting as well. (behind the scenes)

      1. Yeah, but I meant more like starting out in second. Not sure that happens no matter how light you are on the throttle.

  2. I have a 2024 AWD Blazer 2LT, 2.0 4cyl.
There is no “Tow/Haul” mode on the selector knob. When I inquired with dealer, they never came back with an answer. I used AWD mode to haul a trailer. Anyone know which mode to use for towing when there is no mode like this with the knob?
I do have the factory hitch, etc..
    Thank you.

    1. Without knowing how the AWD system is designed, it would be impossible to say it that would help, but it might since that vehicle is FWD when not AWD. Otherwise the front drive wheels might be slightly light. But without a description of the center differential system, it’s impossible to say whether it’s worth it.

Tow/haul tends to just change shift points on most vehicles so that the engine will rev higher. I doubt you’re hauling anything that heavy with that engine, so shift points may not really matter much. For my truck I’ll turn off tow/haul entirely at steady freeway speeds to reduce gear shifting and RPMs. In Ford based motorhomes with V8s or V10s I leave it off almost entirely. But you want to search the manual for tow/haul because some other function might turn it on. For example, tow/haul on my truck turns on the exhaust brake.

  3. My 2024 RS AWD I tow a 3400lb Camper in Tow Haul Mode that activates AWD which also rev eng rpm those added rpm help cool the trans as I understand it but cuts mpg down to 12 is it worth it on short trips under 100 miles ?

    1. You might try monitoring transmission temps, and maybe try my method of turning tow/haul off when cruising at highway speeds. On my truck I find that helps transmission temps a few degrees, but not significantly. But also just check to see what your transmission temps are running. Even similar GM transmissions run at greatly different ranges, so if yours is in the lower range it may not be worth it for transmission cooling (but perhaps it is for other reasons).

  4. The awd models allow one to switch between fwd and awd?

  5. Maybe there is no answer to this???
What are you supposed to do when there is no tow-haul mode on the selector knob of a 2024 Blazer AWD with the 2.0 engine and you want to tow a trailer?

  6. 2024 Blazer RS AWD 6cyl. I get an exhaust resonating noise when the vehicle is accelerating/shifting in lower gears. This occurs in all modes of the driver mode selector. How can I reduce/eliminate this noise?
