While the GMC Sierra 1500 may be positioned as more of a premium pickup, as a truck, it’s still extremely capable in terms of hauling and towing. With that in mind, we’re taking a look at which 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 configurations are rated to tow the most.
In order to make the most of 2024 Sierra 1500 towing capacities, prospective buyers should consider one of two configurations. The first is a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD setup equipped with 20-inch wheels, the Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT), and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax. All told, this combination is rated to pull up to 13,300 pounds, and can be configured in the SLE and Elevation trim levels.
Notably, this is the most weight any 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is rated to tow.
For those who prefer a 5th-wheel / gooseneck hitch setup, look no further than a Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD unit optioned with the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine. Only available on the Pro trim, this configuration is rated to haul up to 9,700 pounds.
Under the hood, the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is available with a plethora of engine choices, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline TurboMax, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax, rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
As far as transmission options are concerned, the L3B is matched to the GM eight-speed automatic, while the L84, the L87 and the LZ0 are all mated to the GM 10-speed automatic.
In regard to structure, the GM T1 platform provides the underpinnings, while production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico

If you ever pulled the boat trailer with a big heavy boat out of the lake or drove up north towing a trailer full of snowmobiles, you will agree that two wheel drive just doesn’t cut it! Make sure you have the truck you need, or you will not be happy.
Great point Fred.
I’m guessing that the configurations that tow the most are identical to the Silverado 1500 configurations that tow the most.
Call me crazy. LMAO. GMA always seems to duplicate articles for each of the brands. Authors paid per word, per post, methinks. I get it. Just a bit funny. I also love hearing about a new color for the year on multiple GM vehicles, in multiple posts, just to see multiple posts that it’s been discontinued, a few days later. Comical. Rock on boys and girls! : )
I want to see which are rated to tow the most in a 4-wheel drive configuration
Great question.
Even though the General claims the GMC truck is Professional Grade, I had to buy the Silverado to get the High Country Trim level, the 6.2 engine and the NHT Max Trailering package.
If you want the NHT option on a Sierra you either have to settle for the 3.0 diesel, or a lower trim level.
