There Are Still Quite A Few 2023 Buick Vehicles On Dealer Lots

Buick is one of the top three brands for 2023 model-year vehicles remaining currently unsold on dealer lots according to Edmunds, with significant inventories of the older model year still available despite several thousand dollars of discounts.

The high remaining number of in-stock 2023 Buick vehicles means that bargain hunters on Memorial Day weekend are likely to find attractive deals on new vehicles if they’re willing to forego the very latest model year, Edmunds reports.

Almost a fifth, or 17.6 percent, of new Buick vehicles currently on dealer lots are from the 2023 model year according to the research. This puts the Tri-Shield brand in third place for the highest remaining amount of 2023 inventory. It was surpassed by Dodge and Chrysler, with 52.6 percent and 38.4 percent of current inventory respectively consisting of 2023 vehicles.

Based on the differences between MSRP and dealer prices, 2023 Buick vehicles have an average discount of $4,256 as of May 2024 as dealerships attempt to shift the outgoing model year off their lots. The two highest-inventory brands have discounts well over $6,000 on average.

The other GM core brands had much lower levels of 2023 vehicles left compared to Buick. In-stock new GMC units include only a 3.4-percent mix of 2023 vehicles, while Chevrolet is at 2.4 percent and Cadillac comes in at just 0.9 percent. Their discounts are also much lower, with 2023 Chevy vehicles discounted just $1,347 below MSRP.

Financing interest rates are also lower for the remaining 2023 vehicles across all brands. More than a quarter currently qualify for 1.99 APR (annual percentage rate) financing, while only 4 percent of 2024 model-year vehicles can be financed that cheaply.

Edmunds head of insights Jessica Caldwell remarked that the high 2023 inventory levels are a trend that “serves as a moment of caution surrounding the old habits of overproduction and inventory glut.” She also pointed out that the situation highlights the impact of high financing APRs, since “the expensive vehicles now being discounted were strong sellers one to two years ago.”

Another insight director, Ivan Drury, highlighted the advantages that 2023 models provide given that they often “don’t sacrifice on vehicle features when compared to current model-year models, leaving funds for peace-of-mind products like extended warranties and wheel/tire protection.”

However, Drury also cautioned that vehicle owners who “prefer to swap their vehicles every few years may want to look elsewhere as these new outgoing models experience heavier immediate depreciation.”

  1. Where are all these 2023’s sitting? Out here in southern California, if you search for Buick inventory you will be lucky to find anything at dealers. At least for the Encore GX and Envista for 2023 and 2024 model years. So maybe most of the 2023’s are the bigger SUV’s?

  2. A little research by the author and Edmunds would be useful. 2023 Envisions were still being delivered in the 1st quarter of 2024 due to the delayed start of production for the refreshed 2024 model. I would bet that most of this inventory are Envisions and most have not been on the lot that long as compared to the 2023’s on FCA lots.

  3. I attempted to buy a 2023 Envision Avenir in early May of this year from a dealer here in Indiana that had been setting on their lot since October 2023. The most they would discount the almost $49K MSRP on a soon to be 2 years old vehicle was $500, and they let me get up and walk out when I told them that is ridiculous. No wonder there are so many unsold 2023 Buicks!

  4. This should be no surprise since Buick’s lineup consists of 4 boring Milk Trucks, given the oversaturation of Milk Trucks available to the consumer, the discount may have to reach $10,000 before these Milk Trucks are sold.

  5. There are 10 2023’s at the Buick dealer near me offering $3500 off, with an extra $500 if you are or were in the military or are a first responder. Eight are Envision Essense and two are Envision Avenir’s. Too bad they look like “boring milk trucks” as Cigna mentioned.

  6. One built in the US, the Enclave, one from China, the Envision, and the CUE’s from South Korea, the Encore GX & Envista. What could possibly go wrong? There is no SUV/CUE competition from other brands, correct?

  7. A chart with the top namebrands would have been nice.

  8. Sorta strange but my local Buick/GMC dealer recently stopped selling Buick and now only sells GMC. I find it a bit odd that they think they can make a go of it selling only GMC. Time will tell.

  9. So many Buick dealers closed this year so I’m wondering if dealers purchased these now left overs from closing franchises?
It’s insane how GM asked dealers to install charging equipment specifically for Buick instead of equipment that could be shared with GMC. Are they trying to kill the brand?
