GM has issued a service update that applies to a very small number of 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2024 Chevy Suburban and 2024 Chevy Tahoe units currently in dealer inventory or in transit, which may require a fix to a misfire issue affecting the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine.
This service update, Number N242442140, applies only to Chevy Silverado, Chevy Suburban and Chevy Tahoe units that are still in dealer inventory, and does not apply to vehicles currently owned by consumers.
All 2024 model-year Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Suburban, and Chevy Tahoe units currently in new and unsold dealership inventory must be held until an inspection for the engine misfire issue can be carried out. Prior to the inspection, all vehicles must be held and not sold or delivered to customers, used in demonstrations, or traded to other dealerships.
Once the inspection is carried out, those vehicles which are found to be free of the issue can be sold as normal after being closed in the GM system as ““Engine Idle and Road Test – Vehicle Passed Inspection (No Further Action Required).” Vehicles that fail the inspection must be held until components for the fix become available.
Currently, there is no fix for the issue, which is caused by burrs in the engine oil circuit. These burrs can cause the engine to misfire, as well as resulting in the powerplant running rough. Affected vehicles are placed on hold until the necessary parts for the remedy are produced. At that point, GM will revise the current bulletin to include the fix.
According to a GM spokesperson, there are only 70 units involved in the service update across the Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Yukon nameplates. Dealers must complete the repair of affected vehicles before June 30th, 2025.
Inspections are to be carried out promptly by dealers with the potentially affected 2024 model year vehicles in their inventory. A VIN list has been provided but should not be used as a substitute for checking the Investigate Vehicle History page.
As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Silverado is underpinned by the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, the GM Silao plant in Mexico, and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada. The same platform provides structure to the Tahoe and Suburban, which are produced at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.

Curious what plant the engines came from?
Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Tennessee
I was just on here two days ago in reference to the decline in quality of the GM vehicles coming out of the plants. What is the problem? GM wake up before the bottom falls out?
Springhill doesn’t make those engines. I was curious if it was identified at Tonawanda or Silao, and wondered if both sites use the data bolts to identify effected units. Pretty good either site cut the issue down to only 70 units with how many engines they produce.
all my research says L84 is made in Springhill. There is even a post from GM authority saying it.
I just bought a 2024 Silverado RST, how can I find out if my truck was previously inspected?
ask dealer to see the affected VIN list.
