General Motors has issued a new service update, identified as N242444830, for the 2024 Chevy Malibu to address a specific issue with the driver’s side outer tie rod nut. According to the Service Update, some units may be equipped with a driver-side outer tie rod nut that is under-torqued. The update aims to ensure the Malibu’s steering and wheel alignment integrity, which is crucial for maintaining optimal handling characteristics and safety.
Service Update N242444830 was issued in May of the 2024 calendar year. It’s unclear at this time exactly how many units of the 2024 Chevy Malibu may be affected by this Service Update. To fix this issue, GM is instructing dealers to perform a check and retorque the nut to 35 Nm (26 pound-feet), if necessary. The service procedure includes lifting the vehicle, removing the outer ball joint nut, disconnecting and then reconnecting the outer ball joint to the steering knuckle, and finally, retorquing the nut to the specified torque before lowering the vehicle.
The corrective service is expected to take approximately 20 minutes and will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners. Any 2024 Chevy Malibu owners who may be affected will be advised to bring their vehicles to their local dealers if they suspect any issues related to the service update.
This service update is reminiscent of a similar update recently issued for the 2024 Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans, wherein the tie rod jam nuts on certain units required tightening to maintain proper vehicle alignment.
As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Malibu is powered by the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, which is rated at 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed to the front wheels by way of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The GM E2 platform provides the underpinnings, while production for the North American market takes place at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas.
