NASCAR fans will soon have an opportunity to own a rare piece of racing history as this 1992 Chevy Lumina Z34 Dale Earnhardt Edition heads to the upcoming Mecum Auctions Indy 2024 event. Scheduled to take place on May 17th, this particular vehicle is numbered 23 of just 25 produced, making it quite the snag for any fan of the Man in Black. Not only that, but the car presents in pristine condition with just 710 miles on the odometer.
This special-edition Chevy Lumina commemorates Dale Earnhardt, one of NASCAR’s most iconic figures, known for his aggressive driving style and regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.
Underneath the hood, this Chevy Lumina cradles the naturally aspirated 3.4L V6 LQ1 engine, rated at 200 horsepower. The V6 is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Beyond the mechanical bits, this special-edition Lumina truly stands out thanks to the exclusive Dale Earnhardt exterior graphics and autographed owner’s manual. The graphics include a black upper portion and silver lower graphics, as well as a checkered stripe that runs around the periphery and Earnhardt’s signature with his famous number 3.
Notably, this special-edition Lumina Z34 was only available through Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet in Newton, North Carolina. Further details include power steering, power brakes, power windows, and power locks, while Dale Earnhardt’s signature was embroidered into the headrests. The interior is bathed in red upholstery, and incorporates a three-spoke steering wheel and special badging. Also notable is the collection of special Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet letters, the build sheet, invoices, and other documentation.
Auction proceeds will go to support the Automotive Education and Policy Institute, which aims to broaden public understanding and improve the consumer experience in the automotive industry.
Mecum Auctions lists this car as Lot F179.1.

Kinda laughable, that generation of Lumina. And that’s before they fusssed around with the 3.4L engine for ’96 just for the sake of fussing around and turned it into a Lemon. I had one and it was the worst car I’ve ever owned (Monte Carlo Z34).

I’ve always like these cars. love the black/silver with red interior. And the outward visibility is fantastic compared to today’s cars.
We had a 4 door Lumina Euro with the 3.1 V6 I think. Chevy had a lot of trouble with the double overhead cam 3.4’s put in early Luminas. I remember with Chevy dropped the Camaro (the first time) after the 2002 model year. A gm “suit” said that Chevy still had the Monte Carlo SS and the Cavalier Z24 to complete with the Mustang (which now has the market to itself). What a joke, no true gear head wanted a front wheel drive “muscle car”.
I recall these when new. A standard Lumina Z34 with a few stickers and stripes. And the Z34 was no pinnacle of performance back then, and the Lumina was competing with the Thunderbird which had RWD and a V8 or Supercharged V6 and a 5-speed as well as the Taurus SHO, a much better performer and nicer overall car. Even lowly Dodge had the Spirit R/T with a 224 HP 4-cylinder and a manual as well. A base Lumina V6 was a decent commuter sedan but had a long way to go to be a decent sports sedan.

The Lumina was in response to the Thunderbird in NASCAR. NASCAR mandated a rear wheel drive and a V8 in production. Since the Thunderbird was embarrassing GM, NASCAR made a concession for the Lumina. A front wheel drive V-6. Magically, the NASCAR version of the Lumina was a rear wheel drive, powered by a V-8.
