Josef Newgarden Wins Another For Chevy At 2024 Indy 500: Video

The 108th running of the Indy 500 almost didn’t happen on May 26th, 2024, as rain drenched the racetrack. The green flag finally fell at 4:44 EST, several hours later than its original scheduled start time, and Josef Newgarden prevailed on the last lap to snag another trophy for Chevy in the historic event.

Right at the start, several race cars wrecked from the back of the field, taking several competitors out of the race, including Marcus Armstrong, who suffered an engine failure and had to retire early. Scott McLaughlin held the after starting on the pole position, holding off his Team Penske teammates, Will Power and Newgarden, both driving Chevy-powered machines.

McLaughlin maintained the lead through several pit stop cycles and restarts throughout the first half of the race. In fact, six caution flags had slowed the field by the second half. Newgarden and McLaughlin traded the lead back and forth several times, but their efforts were stalled once again when Marco Andretti went for a spin and slammed the outside wall. McLaughlin and Newgarden renewed their battle for the top spot once more on the restart, although yet another caution put Conor Daly and Sting Ray Robb out front.

The final round of pit stops took place on Lap 170, putting Newgarden back out front ahead of Scott Dixon. Pato O’Ward entered the conversation with less than 10 laps left on the board, demoting Newgarden to second place as the white flag waved. Newgarden, not to be denied, mounted a charge and completed the pass in Turn 3 heading to the checkered flag, taking the lead through the final corner and securing his second-straight Indy 500 win.

NASCAR’s Kyle Larson completed the Indy 500 and even led a handful of laps before a speeding penalty on Pit Road relegated him to an 18th-place result. Due to the rain delay, Larson elected to prioritize Indy and miss the first half of the Coca-Cola 600. Once Indy was complete, Larson booked it to Charlotte, intending to finish the NASCAR race himself, but ironically, it was shortened due to weather and Larson was unable to turn a single lap.

  1. It would have been nice for the winner’s average speed to be mentioned.

    1. I think the average speed was less than 150mph because of all the yellows.
Great race, glad I was there again, good day for Chevy. Many Honda engines puked.

  2. Fantastic crazy race and finish!

  3. I put my DVR to record the race on NBC since I had to help someone. When I checked the recording, it didn’t have the 2024 race at all due to the rain delay so I missed it. NBC played back scenes of the 2023 race.

  4. Cable DVRs are the worst. Glad I switched to Hulu TV. Hulu DVR automatically recorded all 7hrs of the race.

    1. The DVR I have was set according to the NBC timetable. It can record 72 hours if I set it up. And I don’t need Hulu even if it was free. NBC is a free broadcast channel since 1929.

      1. All that is true. I just ditched cable service because of the price gouging, and I don’t watch a ton of tv anymore.

My main point was that my dvr is set to record all Indy races, but it automatically adjusted the time for me. My cable dvr never did that. I always set the schedule to record + 2 hrs to account for delays.

        1. You nailed it when you said Cable “price Gouging” and the same rip-off and gouging is going on on Satellite TV too from DIRECTV or DISH. There’s not much on that is worth watching anyway with all this endless Voice and assorted phony reality junk, so kissed them goodbye and just stream and DIRECT is pricey too for their streaming service when you add in all their cutesy little hidden charges.

  5. After race interview, O’Ward sounded like a sore loser.

    1. Think he was depressed about not winning but coming so close AGAIN. Don’t know what he had to be sore about ! He mounted a charge in the last few laps that was great to see .

    2. O’Ward dropped the F bomb on live TV, not cool in my book, tarnishes his professionalism.

  6. INDYCAR is so much more entertaining than the ho-hum F1 parade. Darn shame they have such a comparatively short season and they need to add more races !

    1. I know F1 is looking at changes to the Monaco circuit. This year it was all about qualifying.

The competition is pretty close now with McLaren and Ferrari taking it to Red Bull.
