Hyundai Sonata Drag Races Chevy Camaro And Pontiac G8 With Surprising Results: Video

Take a step back, and it’s kind of crazy to think about just how far front-wheel-drive family sedans have come in terms of performance. Take the Hyundai Sonata. While most associate the nameplate with economical A-to-B transportation, the right spec can yield some surprising results at the drag strip. That much is evidenced by the following video, which features a Hyundai Sonata N Line as it takes down a Chevy Camaro and Pontiac G8 in a straight-line battle.

A Hyundai Sonata N Line drag races against a Chevy Camaro.

In the video, we see the Hyundai Sonata N Line first race a sixth-generation Chevy Camaro. The specs for the Camaro are unclear, but the Hyundai ends up taking the win with a time of 13.30 at 106.55 mph. Next up, the Hyundai races a modified Honda Civic, again taking the win with a time of 13.59 at 107.46 mph. Finally, the Hyundai races the Pontiac G8, which sounds like it’s at least equipped with an exhaust. However, the Hyundai finishes off the series of wins with a time of 13.65 at 106.5 mph.

No doubt about it, the Hyundai Sonata N Line is quick. Motivation is derived from a turbocharged 2.5L I4 gasoline engine producing 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, sprinting to 60 mph in around 5 seconds flat.

Traditionally known for their practicality and efficiency, models like the Sonata N Line are now proving they can hold their own against more traditionally performance-oriented vehicles on the drag strip. We would love it if GM offered a Chevy Malibu to rival the Hyundai Sonata N Line. Alas, production of the Chevy Malibu is coming to a close at the end of the year, although a next-gen Malibu is expected for the 2026 or 2027 model year.

  1. Heck a Turbo Cobalt SS with the GM turn could do the same thing 15 years ago and not blow the engine and no one bought it. I ran a 2.0 Eco Turbo for 10 years at 23 pounds of boost and never had one issue.

  2. They don’t know what was under the hood of the Camaro? What is the point here.

    1. V6 I imagine running a 14. That G8 spun and had to lift, nothing impressive here. A mid 13 against non optimal competition. That G8 was traveling 4 mph faster after lifting big time. Not sure how this is at all news worthy…

  3. Judging how many issues Hyundai is having with their 8 speed DCT transmission paired to this 2.5T engine these cars will spend more time in the repair shop than racing older model Camaro convertibles or G8’s
