The 2024 Chevy Colorado introduces additional changes and updates on top of those debuted with the refreshed 2023 model year, including alterations to the available engine lineup for the truck. Now, GM Authority is turning the spotlight on the 2024 Chevy Colorado payload capacities, which are virtually unchanged from the 2023 specs.
Before listing the 2024 Chevy Colorado payload figures, here’s a reminder about the available powerplants that underpin the pickup’s cargo hauling capabilities. These consist of the Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine developing 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and the 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline TurboMax engine providing an output of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Gone in 2024 is the mid-range Turbo Plus 2.7 I4 L3B gasoline engine.
Both engine choices connect to the second-generation Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission, which was chosen for the Colorado because of its support for high torque on the vehicle.
The following table shows the 2024 Chevy Colorado payload maximums by engine type and trim level across all available configurations:
2024 Chevy Colorado Payload Capacities
Trim Level | Drivetrain | Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R | Turbo 2.7L I4 L3B |
---|---|---|---|
Payload (lbs / kg) | Payload (lbs / kg) | ||
WT | 2WD | 1,490 / 676 | 1,710 / 776 |
WT | 4WD | 1,490 / 676 | 1,710 / 776 |
LT | 2WD | 1,460 / 662 | 1,670 / 758 |
LT | 4WD | 1,450 / 658 | 1,670 / 758 |
Trail Boss | 4WD | - | 1,580 / 717 |
Z71 | 4WD | - | 1,580 / 717 |
ZR2 | 4WD | - | 1,280 / 581 |
The highest Chevy Colorado payload is provided by the WT or Work Truck trim, with both 2WD and 4WD configurations offering 1,710 pounds of payload hauling when equipped with the high-torque 2.7L I4 L3B engine.
Predictably, the lowest payload is offered by the range-topping ZR2 trim level with its heavy loadout of off-road features and modifications, with a maximum capacity of 1,280 pounds with the same L3B powerplant.
Owners should pay careful attention to the Colorado’s load limits, checking the Tire and Loading Information label on the truck’s B-pillar and the Certification/Tire label. Passenger weight must be taken into consideration as part of Chevy Colorado payload.
GM Authority has also published detailed specs of the 2024 Chevy Colorado towing capacities, including max trailer weights for vehicles equipped with the optional Trailering Package (RPO code Z82) and Limited-Slip Differential (G80).
Under the skin, the Chevy Colorado uses an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform for structure, with production taking place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

Why would a different engine using the same transmission affect payload? Isn’t payload just GVWR less the weight of the actual vehicle? The weight difference of those engines should be nominal, if not zero.
That’s actually incorrect Information. The 2LR is paired with the 8L45. There was a long discussion and deep dive on what it would take to upgrade the 2LR to the L3B, and it was discovered that the transmissions aren’t identical, and can’t be done.
Thanks for noting that, but still, I doubt there’s a significant difference in weight of the two transmissions, and the 2LR is probably lighter, so that would mean a higher available cargo capacity for the less powerful engine.
I could see the engine difference having some impact on GCVWR and Max Tow, but not payload. Are there maybe different axels too?
