General Motors has issued a Service Update describing a fix that is now available for certain units of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks in which the sheet metal exterior splits in a specific place.
Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra units affected by this issue may have the sheet metal split at the left rear side of the cab, or in other words, on the driver side.
GM dealers are instructed to inspect potentially affected 2024 model-year trucks that are brought in for any reason, as well as those units that are currently in or are added to their inventory. The inspection process will locate any cracks caused by the issue, and requires about 12 minutes to complete, according to service update N242443440.
If damage to the sheet metal on the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 or 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks is detected, the dealership is instructed to repair the cracks or splits per GM instructions. The process of correctly fixing the torn sheet metal requires approximately 10 hours.
GM has provided some additional information about the sheet metal splitting issue. The service update bulletin applies to a total of approximately 22 model-year 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks that may have the subject condition. More than half of this affected vehicle population is currently in dealer possession or in transit to dealer lots.
It’s unclear which of GM’s three light-duty truck plants – namely, the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, the GM Oshawa plant in Canada, and the GM Silao plant in Mexico – produced the affected trucks. However, it should be noted that the number of units is very low compared to the quantities of available trucks. Additionally, this is a service bulletin, not a recall.
As a reminder, both pickup models are motivated by the same lineup of four available powerplants, consisting of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline TurboMax engine rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine developing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine providing output of 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
Under the body panels, both the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 ride on the light-duty variant of the GM T1 platform.

Sounds like trying to make something fit and putting lots of stress on it. Maybe the same tactic should be used to drag the president out of her office and onto the street
Again I have pointed this out on several occasions before what the hell is wrong with GMM every week? There is another vehicle with defective parts or defective design come on GM you better than this
Ok, if they know how many units are affected by this condition, they know where they were assembled. In addition, too little info to describe why the “sheet metal split” has occurred.
Failing tailgates, splitting roofs, failing lifters, now splitting cabs. Where do I sign up for a new truck? NOT!!! I don’t know what has happened to their quality control over the years. They got a new union contract and are still building garbage!
So is the problem:
Hack work on the assembly line?
Engineers who tried specifying sheet metal one gauge too thin?
Chinesium metal from the lowest bidder?
Or a combination of all this?
Imagine everyone will point fingers while we the customer get to buy this #.
I disagree with the “assembly line” thought. I believe it’s costs cutting and therefore the blame should be placed on upper management, directors, CEO’s and Presidents. It’s corporate greed and nothing more. Also, pleasing the share-holders. Mrs. Barra is shjt, I’m assuming she’s still there. Wagging the dog.
Other side, it could be a combination of all of them but why just on these now? What has changed over the model years from 2020 to present? What if the sheet metal is the same gauge? What if engineers are still calling out the same specs that’s something that quality department has to find out and correct. Until then, the confidence in the longevity and quality of these trucks has gone downhill. What do you think is the cause
I think older folks accustomed to the last couple of decades, when trucks were trucks, have just not cought up to the fact that if the truck looks good, and got them chrome wheels, then it’s okay to spend 80K on them. Love my 2004 Silverado. Won’t take 5 of these new trucks for it.
Make em cheaper, faster & more expensive. Then brag about all the new technology they have, which does no one any good when the truck is sitting at the dealership waiting on a fix.
I will keep my 99 Sierra until it dies or I die.
GM junk 😂🤣
Garbage Manufacturing!
Sheet metal repair and dealer repaint on a new truck! No thanks. Our 2008 GMC ranch truck will have to do. gm is so lucky that foreign competitors have never put their design teams full force on pickups. Just ask Cadillac, Buick, Olds, Pontiac or Saturn how that goes.
I was going to trade in my 2015 Silverado for a new one, until my nephew, a GM, mechanic told me about all the engines they see failing with the cylinder deactivation system. Now sheet metal that is spilting? 70K for those headaches. Guess I will hold on to my current rig. New vehicle bug was starting to over ride my good sense.
