GM Releases Final Fix For Chevy Silverado Unlatching Tailgate Recall

The General has issued a final fix for certain 2020 through 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks affected by a recall for a malfunctioning tailgate exterior release switch, with replacement of the component and restoration of correct function now available.

The fix, described as part of Customer Satisfaction Program number N232426401, is also available for affected 2020 through 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickups in Canada, with the remedy offered through May 31st, 2026 in both the U.S. and Canada.

GM instructs service personnel at dealerships to replace the defective tailgate exterior release switch assembly with a newly available, correctly functioning assembly. Previously, switches on the recalled Chevy Silverado units were disabled to prevent the tailgate from opening while driving.

As described in the recall document, the problem was caused by water leaking into the switch and short-circuiting its electronics. This might cause the tailgate to unlatch while in park, then open up while driving, potentially causing cargo or items in the pickup bed to spill out onto the road or strike other vehicles, increasing the risk of an accident. The fix is available free of charge to most affected Chevy Silverado HD and Canadian Silverado 1500 owners.

The recall was eventually expanded from the 545,722 pickup trucks originally included to 819,566 units in March of this year. This total includes both Chevy Silverado units and GMC Sierra units, the latter model also being included in the recall and currently available remedy. The recall also added 249,132 trucks in Canada.

As a reminder, the refreshed 2024 Chevy SIlverado HD has two available powerplants, including the standard naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, and the optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine developing 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque following a new performance boost for 2024.

The Chevy Silverado HD is underpinned by a more capable variant of the GM T1 platform. Production of the truck model takes place both at the GM Flint plant in Michigan and at the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
