GM Recalls Cadillac, Chevy And GMC EVs For Loss Of Propulsion Issue

GM has issued a safety recall for certain affected units of the 2024 model-year Cadillac Lyriq, Chevy Silverado EV, Chevy Blazer EV, GMC Hummer EV SUV, and GMC Sierra EV that may have a defect that can cause the vehicle to suddenly lose propulsion, including while it is driving.

The problem: the recalled units of Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC EVs were produced with rear Ultium Drive motor units containing wires that do not have enough insulation. This can potentially lead to a condition in which the poorly insulated wires contact each other, shutting down the drive motor and causing the electric vehicle to lose propulsion as noted in Safety Recall N242447080.

The hazards: the automaker indicates that the loss of propulsion for the affected EVs caused by the wire-to-wire contact inside the drive unit can occur at any time the motor is operating, including at high speeds on the road or highway. Sudden loss of propulsion caused by the defect, which can happen without warning, could cause a crash.

The fix: dealers are instructed to replace the rear drive unit of recalled General Motors EVs, which requires a drive unit, appropriate bolts, coolant, and transmission fluid. Further, dealerships are instructed not to deliver, sell, trade, or demonstrate recalled vehicles until the remedy has been correctly applied and logged with The General’s online systems.

This fix can only be applied by a properly trained technician.

Affected components: rear Ultium drive unit.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: a representative from The General indicated a very low number of vehicles across all five models are affected, saying in a statement, “General Motors is voluntarily recalling a total of 10 vehicles from the 2024 model year.” More specifially, three Lyriq units, three Blazer EV units, two Silverado EV units, one Hummer EV unit and one Sierra EV unit.

The representative added that “although we are not aware of any field incidents associated with the condition, we’re taking this action out of an abundance of caution. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are our highest priorities.”

  3. Hi. I have a 2024 Lyriq. Mine actually experienced this loss of propulsion many times. And Cadillac does know. I have complained about this propulsion loss sine I got the car 7 months ago. I was accelerating from a stop light with other cars behind me and the car lost all propulsion for 2 seconds and I was nearly struck from the rear. GM is lying. They know.

    1. If this specific problem is actually as described, I would guess that your problem is different. Typically, a wire insulation failure is catastrophic. They’ve probably already had to replace several of these and were able to isolate the problem to a specific run of motors with only ten left to replace.

  4. Love the terminology. Lost propulsion, lol. That happens to Aircraft. Do they mean stop running. Sounds like the wire’s shorted out. I guess that’s not politically correct in the EV world.

  5. It would have been nice if the article had stated the recall number so an owner could lookup the affected VINs on the NTSB website to see if their car is a target for a potential rear end collision !!!! More of GM’s secrecy BS.

It seems that not divulging that information is setting up GM for lawsuits if someone is injured or killed.

    1. It’s right in the article… did you really read it or just posted nonsense?

  6. 10 vehicles….but Mary is ALL IN on electric vehicles. How can it only be 10? Don’t they insult the wiring all the same or at least remotely similar.

    1. They have not made many rear wheel drive only Lyriqs and Blazers yet I believe. Mosty are AWD.

      1. actually the Lyriq is a RWD based vehicle and it’s first production run were RWD only. Now GM builds a mix of both.

      2. Same rear motor is used in RWD and AWD versions.

However GM was likely able to trace the problem back to a very limited production window from the supplier.

    2. Different batches of motor production will get new batches of parts from suppliers and if that batch has an issue it affects that production run. So they isolated the issue to just 10 remaining vehicles with those motors.

  7. I had my ’79 Corvette have a loss of propulsion once. It was out of gas. As I walked home, I realized that red idiot light that lit up “Low Fuel” really did mean 2 gallons or less remaining. Did catch a ride to the station two miles away in town.

  8. Since the 2024 Honda Prologue is based on Trailblazer EV, is it also effected?
