Looking Ahead
Sales of both the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon were in the green during the first quarter of 2024, and together closed the gap considerably to the perpetually leading Toyota Tacoma. However, that showing was helped by a generational changeover as the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma arrives on the scene, with its sales numbers this time around dropping 60 percent as that takes place.
Notably, the 2024 Tacoma offers way more trim levels and configurations than GM’s midsize trucks. And while the Tacoma Trailhunter and TRD Pro are priced higher than Colorado ZR2 Bison, overall pricing between the Tacoma versus the Colorado and Canyon is a mixed bag.
Meanwhile, the refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator has arrived, while the Jeep Gladiator 4xe PHEV was announced for 2025 as Colorado and Canyon rival. The Tacoma also offers a hybrid powertrain for its next-gen midsize truck, while GM does not.
The all-new 2024 Ford Ranger is experiencing a generational changeover as well, with sales plummeting 83 percent this quarter.
About Chevrolet Colorado
A year ago, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the ZR2 Bison is offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.
Five trim levels, including Work Truck (WT), LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2, along with the ZR2 Bison package, are offered for 2024.
The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package hasn’t returned for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.
Furthermore, among the many changes and updates for the new model year, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels and the High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other trims while optional on the WT and LT. On a related note, here are the towing capacities and payload capacities of the 2024 Colorado.
The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and new Off-Road Lighting Package, while Trail Boss and ZR2 trim levels now have the option of a new off-road front bumper package for enhanced off-road capability.
Check out everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.
About GMC Canyon
The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition debuted this past summer, offering a next-level off-roader complete with tons of trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Furthermore, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of their Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road.
For 2024, four trim levels are offered, including Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X, along with the AT4X AEV Edition package.
Additionally, the 2024 Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the name, from now on, of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. That is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims. On a related note, here are the towing capacities and payload capacities of the 2024 Canyon.
The 2024 Canyon offers a new Sports Bar Package, while the AT4 and AT4X trim levels get the option of a new off-road front bumper package for enhanced off-road capability.

The latest issue of Motor Trend is the awarding of “truck of the year”. They explain the value (pricing) of the Canyon vs. Colorado. They couldn’t justify purchasing the Canyon instead of the Colorado.
Sales would be a lot more if the Caynon/colorados were on the dealers lots. My ordered truck is still sitting in Wentzville. 12 weeks!!! Oh Canada!
Yup, can’t sell em if you can’t deliver em.
Why buy a fully optioned Canyon for the same price of a modestly equipped Silverado? Don’t make sense to me.
We are in the same club! Our Z71 was built February 7th and still in Wentzville. My dealer rep even put a “hot ship” on it April 8th and still has not moved. We are 25 weeks 6 days from the order date in November 2023. Very frustrating!!
This is why I never order a truck. I just buy what is available on the lot.
