As GM Authority covered earlier this week, a cryptic ad in the latest issue of Car and Driver hinted at the imminent return of the Pontiac brand, sending enthusiasts into a frenzy over the prospect of witnessing the return of some of GM’s most beloved performance models. Now, GM has provided an official response. Suffice to say, enthusiasts will likely be a bit disappointed.
GM provided the following official statement to the media regarding the ‘Pontiac Is Back’ ad:
“We understand the ad was a joke and it was not placed by GM or anyone affiliated with GM. We appreciate the passion for all our brands as well as a good sense of humor.”
The ad, which appeared on the back page of Car and Driver, proclaimed “Pontiac Is Back” in bold lettering, sparking a flurry of speculation. Car enthusiasts, as well as industry experts, all weighed in on the ad’s meaning, even though at the bottom of the ad a line of text clearly stated that the ad was indeed fake and “not to be taken seriously.”
Despite the tongue-in-cheek nature of the ad, the mere suggestion of Pontiac’s return was enough to ignite excitement among fans. The ad played on Pontiac’s storied legacy as GM’s performance brand, offering a blend of nostalgia and humor that resonated with many who, despite the obvious, wanted to see the ad as a sign that GM was finally bringing the brand back from the dead.
Pontiac was renowned for its performance-oriented vehicles, and the idea of a new model with a 667-horsepower supercharged V8, as mentioned in the ad, was simply too good to give up. Unfortunately, GM’s statement confirms that the ad was indeed merely a joke and not indicative of any actual plans to revive the brand. Bummer.
Pontiac, known for iconic models like the GTO and Firebird, was discontinued in 2010 during GM’s financial restructuring. As the brand approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, it’s clear that enthusiasm for its legacy remains strong.

No kidding it wasn’t GM; it was a great idea and something the customers want. They’re not in that business anymore.
Took the words right out of my mouth. GM listening to their customers is not in GMs nature. If people in China ignited in excitement they’d bring the brand back tomorrow though.
The old timers are rolling in their graves at what been done to this once great company.. From 55% of the market in 1960 to on its knees today.. They once manufactured EVERYTHING now just an empty shell. RIP GM
Ok
GM only made $12.1 billion profit last year. At this rate it won’t be around more than another 200 years.
Of course they would China is the largest market in the World! ANY car company would and does sell millions of cars in China.
Yeah, bring back the Aztec.
Your an idiot. Pontiac was the name of a person, not a tribe. It’s also the name of a city in Michigan and a town in Illinois.
Educate yourself before looking dumb on the internet.
Aaron before calling someone else an idiot, make sure you know which word to use.
You’re an idiot. (Correct usage) Your an idiot. (Incorrect)
Educate yourself before looking dumb on the internet.
We all love Pontiac and don’t need childish name calling over such a simple mistake.
MR. Grammar the negative thumbs down on Kamala’s comment would suggest otherwise…but your not idiots your like pre schols kids or kindergarten kids fight over dumb name calling… actually my four year old son doesn’t even do this! And GM never got sued for using the Pontiac name that was Jeep with Cherokee which is probably why they dropped the name in favor of Liberty then after so many years brought the name back…ya know people we have the Internet if your going to say something look it up it takes less then five minutes, unless that was a racist comment about native American people….in that case I’ll send my part Lenape (native American) wife after you!
Ya all be nice now… name calling doesnt solve nothing… sorry i may have grammer and speling wrong, after all I am a french native americans…. I hope Pontiac does come back ….
@Aaron speaking of the Internet here I looked it up about Pontiac. Pontiac or Obwaandi’eyaag (c. 1714/20 – April 20, 1769) was an Odawa war chief known for his role in the war named for him, from 1763 to 1766 leading Native Americans in an armed struggle against the British in the Great Lakes. I don’t have a picture of it but my grandfather had a 58 Pontiac I forget which model it was because I’ve never seen the car he died before I was born but anyway the Chef Pontiac hood ornament would light up at night. That’s how Pontiac was I owned a 2001 Grand Am GT that car was a little over the top but it was all black and I loved that car good reliable flashy transportation lol. Oh and I wish Red interior lights would make a comeback even if you could switch colors they were much easier on the eye to me anyway.
So my 4door Pontiac is a vintage vehicle????
I think the Firebird was like the Camaro.
Pontiac was the name because it was in Pontiac Michigan…stupid.
Can’t wait to not buy into gm’s “all-EV future”. Boring, dystopian BS.
What was the point of the ad? Like it wasn’t even ‘funny’…so I’m not sure what the ‘joke’ was? Just a waste of money for someone.
You should keep your unkind words to yourself small person or douche. .
Glad to see that the buzz was strong enough to make GM release an official statemet.
Even though I am not a Pontiac fan, I thought that it was a very bad joke!
It figures that post would be totally wrong and show how stupid the person is. Look at their name….Kamala
I am a huge Pontiac fan. Who would spend something like $200K on a fake ad? So I still think they are testing the waters. But I have serious reservations about GM’s leadership & politics at this moment in history. I guess we will see.
Who paid for the ad?
Who do you think paid for the ad General Motors ✌🏽
Who do you think paid for the ad General Motors ✌🏽 General Motors testing the waters… 🌊
The fact that response to the “fake” ad was as positive as it was, should be an indicator to the elites in charge of GM that axing Pontiac was a bad decision and should be reversed. I’m quite sure that the revival of the brand would be well received, far beyond anything the elites could imagine. Honestly, I think they’re completely out of touch with what the public really wants.
I always bought Pontiacs and other g m products.no more they now build boring products.
This is the same for me. My last new car was a 2006 Pontiac Solstice that I took ownership of in December of 2005. I sold it in 2010, and I’ve been buying Fords ever since. There is literally nothing… like… dead serious, not a single GM car that have any interest in whatsoever. I couldn’t even name a GM car anymore except for some of the old SUVs (Suburban / Tahoe) and the new Corvette. Everything else… it all looks exactly the same, varying egg-shaped front wheel drive SUVs.
Ford at least has interesting cars.
I just drove my Pontiac to pick up a friend , 2008 Solstice. Sure, it doesn’t compare at all with the GTO or TA, but still a fun car to drive. I had a 1969 Catalina when I got married. I also have a 2024 Corvette Z06, truly a blast to drive.
The problem is they’ll bring it back, it’ll be a good car that they don’t advertise, don’t ever update and just let sales wither away.
The chevy SS was a great car (what the second gen G8 would have been) and the Camaro was a better car than the mustang, (arguably still might be) except they haven’t updated it in forever, and didn’t address the biggest complaint, poor visibility.
Both cars were awesome and they let sales wither away and then discontinued them.
GM doesn’t want to build good cars people wants, they want to build the cars that make them the most money regardless if they lose reputation from car enthusiasts.
Wrong twice. Just because your lizard brain can’t process anything further than “omg GM stands for Government Motors, bahurhurhurhurnderp”
Mustang has been left in the dust for years. GM took less bailout than Ford and Chrysler, and GM was also the ONLY one during any of the TARP programs at the time to actually pay it back.
Pull yer head out of your a**
Typical gm nut swinger, lies come so easy for you. Are you sure you don’t work for CNN? Lol Ford never took a bailout. Educated yourself.
No, they just took out billions in “loans” from the Government to build “better emission vehicles” so where are these better emission vehicles they needed the money for?
A loan is a loan bailout or not. So, they took more government money than GM and Chrysler.
First: You are no Lord or Savior! Second: GM and Mopar both were majorly involved in the government bailouts and cut more divisions than Ford ever did.
Ford did not take part in the bailouts and further more GM and Mopar Executives had no faith in their own brands as they flew to DC, Ford Executives had faith in their brand and drove to the meetings and to top it off no matter the crap you are spewing, Ford stood their ground and did NOT take part in the bailout!!
GM hadn’t wanted to shut down the Pontiac division. It was the creditors, that were handling the bankruptcy restructuring, that felt that Pontiac wasn’t successful enough to continue in the “new” GM.
GM still owns the trademark but has, so far, decided not to do anything with it
GM may still own the Pontiac Trademark but GM no longer owns Trans Am, They sold the rights to the Trans Am / Firebird.
Now Known as “Trans Am Worldwide”
They’re out of touch, because they were hand-picked by the administration’s Auto Task Force after the FORCED bankruptcy of the company. I’ve lost all my notes, but the new board of directors was made up of a political donor, a bus manufacturer (former Blue Bird CEO I think), a former UAW union director, a former head of a school district, and a former SES from the EPA. There were some other inconsequential board members, but none of them were “car enthusiasts.” Matter of fact, they were trying to kill the Corvette. The whole purpose was to bail out the UAW (who were the ones ACTUALLY going bankrupt), and transform GM into an environmentally friendly company. They viewed GM as leading the change in new vehicle technology (headlined by the Volt). People don’t like to be forced into something… they want to do something because it interests them. This is why the Tesla is so popular. Anyway, I would doubt seriously if any of the board members (how many of them are still the same) have ever even owned a Pontiac.
GM doesn’t really need this copy cat brands. It was fine when there was really only the Big 3, but to have copied models of Chevy for example isn’t profitable. They should have stayed away Saab as well. I mean think about it, you can’t have entire assembly lines for a few fans. I did like Pontiac Trans Am better than the Chevy Camero, they had enough differences in the build back in the old days of hot rod. It makes sense to shed the weight these days .
In this case they’re adding weight since they intend to go full EV
Well, Chevy copied Pontiac. The 1964 GTO was the first muscle car. Everybody copied Pontiac after that. Pontiac never wanted to make the Firebird, it was forced to. DeLorean wanted a hot rod Corvette. It would have been better than Chevy and they know it, it’s why they didn’t let them make it. I was one of those in the 80’s, 90, 2000’s that ONLY owned Pontiacs. I knew everything about them, and still have a 1965 GTO. I am glad none of those UGLY models in the add aren’t going to get built. I never even accepted the “Chevy” GTO’s and G8. You have to make it classy, and with its own motor. Fact.
Pontiac should and could come back as a sub brand of Buick.
The “Pontiac” that folks want, GM isn’t going to produce. IMHO, why should they? They just killed the Camaro….
The idea of “Heritage” only applies to Corvette at GM. Everything else is purely transactional. If it’s not profitable, it’s not going to be produced.
If you want a “Pontiac” like they use to make, the collector car market is where you go. Find near exactly what you’re looking for and a good chance way cheaper than anything that would be offered today. You’ll become the caretakers of the brand’s “heritage”…not GM.
Isn’t there still a company licensing the Trans Am brand from GM and making new Trans Ams from new Camaro bodies?
Yes, Trans Am Worldwide. They’re not Camaros, but have new carbon fiber bodies. Their current car has a body that looks like a 1970 Chevelle, pretty cool. The Trans Am and “GT9” (GTO models) are sold out. Base price for their cars is $175k
No it is a camaro, the vin tag says it all.
Bring back the Lemans!!! I have a ’69.
Actually in 2009 Ford took 5.9 billion in a government loan that they still haven’t paid back. That funding helped them through the other bailout periods when GM and FCA were bailed out. Google it. Dodge was first on the Lee Iacoca days, Then Ford in 09, then GM and FCA. All three had help at one time
I have a 71 GTO Judge,,, love it!!!!
GM frankly has the most unimaginative management possible. It’s no wonder they went from over 50% market share to 17%. And they have no idea how to get back even above 20% let alone 50%.
The only two cars they recently had that interested me was the Camaro and the Vette and they killed the Camaro.
Yes …. This is what you get when you initiate the D E I crap and install people like they were “Forced” to do when “O’Blammer” did the Government bailout to “Save” GM. A company “too big to fail”..
They absolutely have NO Imagination and apparently also no WILL to do the right thing for the customer base and the people who have been loyal to them for Years.
No demand for sedans??? Really??? then why do Honda and Toyota and Hyundai and others till make and SELL them by the thousands??? GM should have Promoted the Impala and LaCrosse and others – they would have sold … After all …. they are almost the only Cars that Consumer Reports liked from American car companies !!!
DEI is the new woke. Anything, or anyone that someone disagrees with is one or both.
So who placed the ad?
Time for some investigative journalism GMA.
Find out:
1) who placed the ad
2) why they placed it
3) who paid for the ad
4) did someone or some company secretly bankroll the person/company that placed the ad
Like people always say, follow the money.
I guess it was not a paid ad, but a joke made by the magazine’s editors.
I can’t believe a struggling magazine is going to waste some of its most prime advertising real estate to put in a fake ad that didn’t generate any revenue. Someone PAID for the Ad.
It’s a non-denial denial. GM is working the deal, trying to get some hunger developed amongst the faithful.
GM, bring back Pontiac!
I always thought it was a mistake to drop the Firebird line. I have owned 7 and still have 2. With Chevrolet being stupid and dropping the Camaro it’s a perfect time to bring back the Firebird because I will never buy a Corvette.
What made Pontiac’s vibe for the baby boomers was John DeLorean. No longer can you build today as when back in the sixties. At that time each division built what they wanted. Engines were also built for each division.
If anything happened today, it would be a reskinned Buick or Chevrolet sharing everything under it.
Pontiac had its own engineering staff that would make chassis and suspension changes to the badge engineered cars, so that they had the Pontiac “feel”
GM is on the road to bankruptcy again. They are in bed with the government after being revived from their last bankruptcy. GM use to have management that understood and had experience in the automotive business. Now they have bean counters who don’t have a clue how to be an automaker. Good luck with your electric cars that most people don’t want!
Bringing Pontiac back with performance automobiles was a great idea. That´s the reason why GM is not going to do it. Today the standard is to produce looking alike, unrecognizable and lack of character boring cookie cutter SUV´s and crossovers that will never become collectible, classic or enthusiast cars. Even with the bunch of technology actual vehicles have, they represent the worst and most boring designs and the most involutive vehicles in the whole automotive history.
I personally loved Pontiacs owned a Bonneville and a JCar Sunbird, both cars could out handle other comparable brands.
The sunbird had 4.1:1 axle ratio and was a ball to drive!
Always wanted a GTO and Grand Ville.
Been trying to make a comment on the logo, but the “Authority” doesn’t seem to want it posted.
GM, the manufacturer that brought such amazing cars as the GTO, the Hurst/Olds Cutlass Supreme, the Grand National and GNX, beautiful designs. They made behemoths like the 1976 Sedan deVille, coming in at just under 3 tons and 20 feet in length. Cars, trucks, vans, SUV’s, from entry level to ultra luxurious, GM had it. First they killed the coupe. Then they killed the sedan. Now EVERYTHING is a SUV or a pickup.. Now they are trying to kill the internal cumbustion engine… The people have spoken? They want cookie cutter everything? It all looks the same. You cannot get but 3 interior colors now. Paint? Red, blue, black, or white. All of the art is gone, give us the same turd with a different name stamped on it. No wonder the imports are killing it, at least they are offering sedans and coupes, but they’re still listening to their customer base too. And they are selling!
Mary Barra: *laughs in electric cute-ute*
I, long ago had a Pontiac E’Sprit red and white.t drove great and looked really nice also. That is until a coal carrying coal dump truck hit it near Kingwood Wv. Never the less it wasn’t pretty anymore. It was one fine car and I liked it very much. Great cars but the business was poorly operated so it , like other big companies went out of business. Vey sad for a company that made good fun cars. To this day the GTO is and always will be one of the great ones of automobile makers.
It’s a good thing this fake ad came out now. In 10 to 15 years, hardly anyone between 20 and 30 will remember GM’s “Youth Brand”.
To me, Pontiac was like the more affordable Cadillac. My first car was a very affordable 2008 Pontiac G6 GT coupe; for a young single person, it was amazing. Great speed, handling, and gas mileage. The interior was leather, with heated seats, an amazing Monsoon sound system. Lots of room front and back. A huge trunk. Chrome wheels. I was so excited to see where they were headed and then boom. Dead.
I think Pontiac must come back. I am a fan of that brand and I have one Pontiac Vibe 2006 and would never exchange it to any other car or brand.
It is:
“My most reliable friend.”
One of my favorite cars I ever had was a black ’89 Firebird Formula 350.
I now drive (for more than 2 years and rit uns FABULOUS) a ’99 Grand Am. GREAT car. 💖
I think that GM should bring back Pontiac, but reclaim the identity the brand had in the muscle car days. From the 80s on they had become nothing more than twins of Chevrolets with the cheesy, plastic body cladding.
Treat Pontiac like Stellantis had done with Dodge in recent years – performance focused machines that look nothing like anything else in the company. With a couple of exceptions, Chevrolets are turning into bland EVs that offer no distinction in styling from any of their competitors. Do something different, something that ignites passion in people. It can be done with the right marketing approach.
GM – as well as the other manufacturers – are apparently marketing their vehicles primarily to people who see vehicles as nothing but an appliance, something to get from Point A to Point B and nothing else. That needs to change.
I still say it was Elon Musk BS posting offline.
Man!!! Why are you playing with my emotions 😭😭😭😭 I would love to see Pontiac comeback with a vengeance 💪💯💪💯🙏❤️🙏❤️
The real question is will GM get the hint that the majority of their vehicles are boring and the only models that aren’t boring are very expensive. Pontiac was a brand that most normal folks could afford.
Why don’t GM come back with new tech model cars of the Chevelle or the GTO like Dodge did with the charger and the challenger. Put 500 and 600 hp. motors in them. True car enthusiasts will buy them. Look how many Dodges are out there.
Rather obviously it was a joke, but the question was, and still is, who paid for it? My guess is the C&D had a last minute cancellation, or worse, non-payment for a prior ad, and had space available. Given C&D had articles written by P.J. O’Rourke they obviously have a sense of humor.
Just like the us Government, GM doesn’t care what we want. They just give us what they think we need. What a shame
GM lost my family and myself as customers. Poor quality and inferior products. Buying Asian from now on.
What happened to you GM? You use to be cool.
bring back automobiles we need cars enough with trucks
Growing up in the 50s and 60s was the BEST !
Cue the under 30 snowflakes to call their Therapists .
A GM car with a Pontiac badge on it with an LS under the hood.
A.. whoever paid for the ad should have used that money for crypto or scrat off lottery tickets.
B..the bird isn’t even accurate
C..if China wanted a Firebird, it would have the greatest unveiling at the next Chicago auto show
D..even if ut did return, it would still be a GM product. That’s metric for the engine will be a dream, the rest of the car will be a nightmare til you’re driven to leave the car on the dealers lot with the keys in .
GM does listen to the the customer.nor do they admit to engineering mistakes… there customer service ?? As an ex-Cadillac owner the arrogance by reps handling my issues was most definitely the straw that broke the camel’s back…I will not bore you with all the issues..I’ll just say HT 4100 and -NORTHSTAR Engines Not to mention the 8-6-4 and diesel engine..and they wonder how Toyota is #1
That’s why I am no longer a Chevy./GM guy because we all know that Chevy is GM and they would never want to have Pontiac come back and make them look bad.
Well it could be a test of Pontiac public interest, but knowing GM I doubt it. Other than a few GM cars, and they were usually Pontiacs, I’m not a GM fan, I never have been. I’ve been a Ford man since the mid-60s, and I also liked Chrysler, even with all their financial issues, they still built better cars than GM. When GM had 5 brands on the market they were the largest automotive manufacturer on the planet, but being the largest did not make them the best. Over the years it’s been clear that GM was not in the business to build cars, it was just for the money, and it’s always showed in the cars they made. GM has never been known for making good decisions about the cars, their heads were always someplace else. Maybe there shouldn’t be a woman at the helm, look what it did at IBM, their in recovery mode now that a man is in charge. I realize that’s not a pc thing to say, but it is what it is. GM is now down to 3 brands and a truck with 2 names on it. Maybe it’s time for GM to become a worldwide bakery, they might be good at that.
Perhaps we need to contact Honda, or Toyota and see if they would be interested in bringing Pontiac back.
Too bad. First GM dropped my beloved Olds, then they dropped Pontiac. The only 2 GM brands I would ever drive.. I finally said to hell with them and bought a Ram. Never thought I’d ever own a Mopar product, but it was my “F@&! you” statement to GM. To this day, I still won’t buy a GM product.
They should have kept the best of Pontiac and made it a trim level of certain Chevy vehicles
Persistence. If you want something bad enough you will stick with the pursuit until you get it. If you give up you are like the fox that turned away from the vine after not being able reach the grapes. “I didn’t really want them in the first place; they’re probably sour, anyway.” In other words, you are a fair-weather pipe dreamer.” How do we know that their decision-maker process is not,
1) Put up the ad.
2) Wait to see and hear what people say.
3) Tell everyone it is a joke and GM was never involved.
4) Repeat number 2.
5) Depending on reception, put up an “anonymous” design concept.
6) Repeat number 2.
7) etc.
Personally, I hope, and kind of believe, that it was a legitimate test balloon. This is now the point that GM waits to see just how serious the public is in wanting it back. Think of this simply as a true call to rally, or be a fair-weather pipe dreamer.
As for me. If they build it. If they price it properly. Count me in on wanting the chance to put a brand spanking new Poncho in my driveway next to my ‘33 pickup, 2014 Silverado, and my wife’s 2020 blue Blazer.
It would be a lot cooler if Pontiac was coming back. A new GTO and Firebird would be awesome.
Back in 2008, I owned a Grand Prix GXP, and liked it so much, I’m now looking to buy one for my soon to be 17 years old son. On average, I’ve purchased a new (to me) car every year since 2008, but I still own a 2009 G8 GXP with 6-speed manual… that I never plan to get rid of! If I had the means, I would buy an SS with 6M and do a body-off-frame replacement with my G8 … so I could have the better magnetic suspension and other creature comforts, but still have my Pontiac on the outside.
Can we all just imagine what a reinvented Fiero would look like?? With the C8’s having such a drastic change in looks to encapsulate the mid-engine setup…. A new Fiero would almost definitely take on a Mclarenesque appearance!
A newer Grand Prix 2 door model similar to the 95-96 2 door look converted to RWD and supercharged in the GXP models would be sick as well!!! The Grand Am also had a great following and the fact that I still have not mentioned “The Judge” or the Firebird models and honestly if they kept the firebird and Fiero versions remotely close to the C8 aesthetics in any way shape form or fashion they could easily produce the parts along side the C8’s parts with minimal retrofitting to equipment that I would assume is already installed in these plants and not being utilized so hell why not GM???? I mean, at least you know if it flops that our righteous government is going to help you out of the mess(stale attempt at some much needed humor.)
Oh hell yes! In the late ’90s I owned a black, ’89 Fiero Formula edition. It came with a “suspension by Lotus” badge located on the passenger side of the dashboard that impressed every friend who rode in her. That car was one of the most fun rides I’ve ever owned. The Magnaflow exhaust and custom air intake really let that Tune Port V6 sing. Plus the intake manifold for that car was really unique with it’s red lettering and accents. My Fiero sounded amazing. Towards the end of the Fieros run the car was beginning to perform extremely well and had come a long way from the days of being a side of the road fireplace. I would love to see a reimagined Fireo. Unfortunately, we all know how GM feels about building cars that out perform or even come close to out performing their flagship Corvette… But yeah… A modern Fiero would be something wouldn’t it!
Completely unrelated question to the GM/BUICK side of things……. Why in the HOLY SMOKES have we not seen a Grand National remake!! The grand national is the PIONEER of turbocharged performance vehicles. With the superior following that has come with the Street Outlaws TV series, the popularity of having turbos vs. huge ci. Engines and enough NOS to fill a blimp has really changed the racing world. When I was a kid it was the only thing I can ever remember having a turbocharger and watching it at our local drag strip just flat out destroy the Camaro’s, firebirds, fox bodies, and even the classic old school dragsters was just something to glamour at because it was only a V-6 and would walk the dog on some of the best performing cars at the track that were driven by some of the best drivers in and around the Carolinas at the time and the fact that is was only available in black was even better!! Hell, I would love to own a Grand National from back in the day but everytime the market is right to grab one just so happens to be right after purchasing a brand new truck or car and then when I have some extra cash the market for one that I do t have to rebuild is upwards of $40,000. Which who knows if anyone ever paid that much for one but I am sure someone has. @buick bring back the grand national just don’t chop it down like they did the GTO some 15-20 years ago…. Please, it has to be long and sleek, satin black, and I’m not sure if the 3.8 would be as good as a turbocharged 4.3 but please bring it back even if you only make 100 of them I feel like 100 of them would be sold immediately
Only Jokers would have thought this joke was true! It will never happen because GM does not need Pontiac and the majority of the public does not want it! It would not make any business sense so shareholders would not want it to happen!
To bad I already have the check written for the new Trans Am.
Of course GM had nothing to do with it. It is not a good business practice to do what your customers are begging to throw money at.
(Rolleyes)
🙄
pontiac was a chevy with lock washers..
What a shame that GM had the first shot to go retro with a new GTO. Instead they took an Australian sedan named Holden with no styling or definition and threw a couple of GTO badges on it and thought it would be a success. IMHO, that was the downfall of Pontiac. You still had millions of baby boomers willing to relive and purchase their childhood dream car. The idea was rushed and there was no planning whatsoever for the project. I worked for a board member of GM when that happened and they were oblivious to the history of the GTO over 40 years earlier. Look at the success of the Mustang, Camaro, Charger and Challenger who all went retro after the GTO debacle.
The leadership at GM needs to go especially the CEO. She is useless.
Remember GM destroyed the Pontiac image as a performance brand with such colossal failures as the Aztec and a Cavalier clone the Sunfire . It’s almost as if someone really intended to destroy the brand.
While it is truly hard to accept for some of us. The great america we once knew is dead and it isn’t the country we live in anymore. While it is sad. It’s time to move on. Let those memories of good times fade and embrace this new dark depressing world we live in.
So true. Now I know how my grandpa felt when he would explain to me that “things aren’t what they used to be”. As a kid and even a teenager, I never clearly took to heart just exactly how profound that statement was. I sure do now because things are definitely not what they used to be.
Yeah, William, that is the effect of what they call TIME, which is something which passes, and then it is gone. Over. Out.
Nothing ever remains the same, except change itself.
RIP Oldsmobile and Pontiac. Sad
I think it was very well executed.,… It got people talking maybe some high hopes and it was enough racket for the execs at gm to get up and make the statement they did who ever funded it my hat is off to u gm needs to realize they should have gotten rid of the fricken buck line up and stuck with the horsepower like dodge did with the challenger/red eye and all that
I used to be a die hard GM guy but I wouldn’t buy any of their over engineered, under reliable, ‘just make last til the warranty expires’ junk they pedal now.
Im in my 50’s now but my dad workd for gmac the financial side of gm for 40 years till he was pretty much asked to retire. He had a lot of gm stock which would of taken care of my mom after he passed but NO when gm and the rest of car makes went to the banks for money and the government stepped in a took gm over my mom got nothing they took the stock and said F**K YOU you have no stocks. GM THANKS FOR SH*TTING ON YOUR EMPLOYEES.
Bro, take heart. The more things change, the more they stay the same. If you want a Pontiac bad enough, you can go the kit route. I was looking yesterday at all the options available right now and they seem really cool.
TransAm Worldwide has been making extremely good “Pontiacs” for years. As for the 2 guys arguing about the Mustang and Camaro. The Camaro lead for years except for a brief time during the 80s. Until Ford decided to go with a flat plane crank. Which they would not have done if not for the a** whooping they were getting from GM. In the end I truly believe that both cars performed evenly across the board. As a true car enthusiast, I have owned and absolutely loved both of them. Oh, almost forgot. I personally think GM is lying and that if done right a proper EV hybrid could work.
GM should have sold that brand like it sold Saab to the Chinese, who would have made the Wuling brand a Pontiac, Imagine a screaming eagle on that Mini EV!!!😂
Sure bring Pontiac back. The world needs more boring , generic SUV’s . They would be Chevy’s with a Pontiac grill and taillights. That’s what sells now. Only a tiny minority want performance cars.
Yes, but we may get a trans am
I have a charger daytona and one boring compass
C&D has a long history of coming up with bogus stuff once every year. It wasn’t by chance in the April issue, was it???
Most of my family worked at and retired from GM – my Grandma, who was the Matriarch of our family, worked her whole career and retired from Pontiac Motors. All I’m saying is, “wake the hell up, GM!” Look at how much positive energy and vibes this “joke” or “ruse” brought the car world! Maybe switch gears and go a better direction than the most recent paths y’all have taken…
GM and Mary Boring couldn’t possibly reestablish the Pontiac line because they’d have to stamp out the letters “P” “O” “N” “T” “I” “A” “C” and glue them on to one of their boring, generic transport pods and the union workers would probably go on strike and sue for cruelty and another $150 an hour. We don’t make things in this country anymore. Next up: Boeing.
I miss pontiac, now I went Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Compass Trailhawk. GM went traitor to me when they axes Pontiac.
I used to be a GM loyalist, not anymore and I’m sure I’m not alone
Gm and their management is a joke!
I am a younger person who was coming of age around 2010, the death of pontiac literally made me vow to never ever purchase a new car — there are just simply none that I want. So I bought a 79 trans am, and have driven that ever since. Oh, and im from NEW ZEALAND.
Steve, I saw the video on the TransAmWorldWide Com
.It had a Camero body, but Pontiac design. It is beautiful! It can go 267 mph, according to the owner who is based in North Carolina. My dad WOULD roll over in his grave if he knew what GM did to Pontiac! He was the second best Pontiac salesman in the country in the 1970s. I hate that GM dropped Pontiac!
Well dang. I was ready to buy a new Firebird.
I don’t understand why someone would spend the money for a fake add like this. Just to rub salt in the wounds? Aren’t the emissions standards an average of the entire product line? If they make a bunch of EVs and a few gas sippers, why can’t they make something like a Chevy SS successor, on the alpha platform that’s already been developed, with the LT2 engine. That’s already been developed, with a manual transmission option, rear wheel drive, with the Pontiac badge that looks cool? The Cadillac performant sedans are cool, but expensive. Something a little more juvenile/cheaper would be fantastic. They have all the options for the masses, God forbid they have something to offer to the enthusiasts. GM is dead
That’s why Ford is mopping up the floor with the now Generally Made Cheap vehicles . I have owned five trans ams three different generations, and would love to own one again, but I have the only real American muscle car that’s still made in 2024 and that’s a mustang and it’s a great car. Would love nothing more than to park at 2025 667 horsepower trans Am with a shaker hood next to it in my garage. But again we’re messing with GMC which right now are making awful vehicles.
Well that sucks
GM does not own the name Trans Am, they paid a fee to the owners of the name to use it. GM also owns the name Pontiac and will continue to own it
Bring it back!!!
Isn’t this response enough to get you to bring Pontiac back & drop Buick
No make it the way it used to PONTIAC/BUICK/GMC. Chevy can be sold with Cadillac or on its own! Or make the two premium brands GMC/ CADILLAC share a dealership abd put Chevy with PONTIAC/BUICK/CHEVY ! Please GM don’t drop another brand.
The last GM I will every buy new would be a Pontiac. Had a 2006 GTO. Have a 2010 vibe and a 2008 solstice gxp. I wanted but buy a G8 truck.
Pontiac has been only a nameplate since 1984 when Roger B. (for bonus) Smith ushered in his asinine reorganization plan. Typical g.m. bureaucratic stupidity. From that point forward pontiac was just a sales arm for g.m. and managed by Chevrolet. Pontiac hadn’t built a V-8 since 1981, and their iron puke 4-cylinder, tech 4, (junk 4), call it what you will, was mercifully put out of its misery in the early 90s.
It wouldn’t surprise me if g.m. is working the deal though. It wouldn’t be the first time the company has misled the public. And the wording of the ad copy sounds a lot like the childish mumbo jumbo that g.m. likes to use. But the idea that pontiac will ever be a standalone division within g.m. with its own engineering and sales staff or C.E.O. is nonsense. Not with the current management tripping over themselves rushing headlong into this electric vehicle crap. But that fiasco in the making is another story. Stay tuned for that.
The idea that pontiac would ever again be an entity unto itself is laughable.
Oh, by the way, the use of lower case is intentional.
Just bring Pontiac back into production one of these days General Motors, it would truly be awesome, the news Pontiac is back for good and is back in production! I have truly loved all of the Pontiac`s I have owned! Pontiac`s are true icons, they
are cool, sporty, eye catching body styles, fun to drive, and I always feel special driving them! I am just a loyal and true fan,
owner and driver of the Pontiac brand!
Get on your cheviac and ride. Nuff said.
That’s what is wrong with GM. Old fashion, staid and boring. Look at Chrysler and the Challenger. Just one hot rod in the Chrysler Corp. (Charger being discontinued probably temporarily) and its running circles around the rest. Well, GM take a hint and get with it. Bring back a sport-oriented Pontiac division. I have a red 69 Firebird Convertible with a racing engine. I could sell it in one day for $80,000.00. I hide it in the garage. Take a hint GM!!!
OK GM. Respond to us all. If I had the garage space now I would buy a Challenger just to burn rubber once in a while and have some fun to break the monotony. I would not even consider a Challenger if you came out with the GTO. I am from the 60’s. We had hot cars from GM, Plymouth and Ford lined up all the time ready to take off.

It’s unfortunate GM is not considering a comeback of Pontiac. This brand like Oldsmobile or Plymouth l is still fondly remembered and it could be a smart move to resurrect them. Of course it would be useless if it’s to make insipid SUVs or horrible cars like the infamous Aztec. GM must hire talented car designers and use legendary names like GTO or Transam to attract buyers. Even for GM surviving brands this would be a good strategy, Do you think Cadillac or Buick are still able to propose cars that will be collectables in the future like the Roadmaster or Eldorado? This is the key, make GM brands attractive again!
