Back in May 2023, GM Authority reported that General Motors was rated as having a “very good” reputation. However, in the 2024 rendition of these reputation rankings, the Detroit-based automaker took a slight step backwards.
According to the 2024 Axios Harris Poll 100 Reputation Rankings, The General maintained its “very good” score despite a six-spot slide to 40th overall. In regard to specific categories, GM was ranked 27th, 39th and 41st in culture, products & services and ethics, respectively, while the citizenship and character categories were only scored as “good.”
It’s worth noting that GM-rival Ford took a 23-rank nosedive and resides at 55th with a “good” score. That being said, General Motors still trails behind Honda, Toyota and Subaru at seventh, 12th and 15th, respectively.
As for Axios’ methodology, the survey follows a three-step process. The first part is a survey of 6,273 Americans from a nationally representative online sample. Fielded from January 16th, 2024 to January 27th, 2024, those who were surveyed were asked which two companies stand out to them as having the best reputation, as well as which two have the worst. The results were then complied into a list to determine the 100 “most visible” companies.
Next, a second survey of 16,500 Americans from a nationally representative sample was deployed to analyze the first survey’s results. Fielded from March 6th, 2024 to March 18th, 2024, this second survey asked respondents which of the 100 “most visible” brands they were familiar with, and to rate the two that they felt as though they were “very familiar or somewhat with” on nine dimensions of reputation. This rating was then used to calculate a Reputational Quotient, which determines the respective score of each company.
Finally, a third set of respondents were given a set of contextual questions on several topics, including brands and politics. This final round of surveys was conducted in two waves from May 10th, 2024 to May 12th, 2024 and May 17th, 2024 to May 19th, 2024.
