GM Design Team Shows Off PEV Host Shuttle Concept: Video

GM recently highlighted an interesting transportation concept from the Urban Active Project, providing a clever take on all-electric propulsion solutions. Created by the GM Advanced Design team as part of the Urban Active Project, it’s called the PEV Host Shuttle concept, and it envisions a unique blend of personal and mass transit solutions designed to revolutionize city commuting.

Published on GM Design’s official Instagram feed (@generalmotorsdesign), the concept aims to “expand the usefulness of small city vehicles by moving them over longer commute distances while the passengers stay onboard to relax and re-charge,” according to the post description.

A GM transportation concept called the PEV Host Shuttle.

The brief video clip showcases the innovative system in action. It begins at a dedicated loading station where several Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs) line up to board a large autonomous shuttle. The PEV drivers simply maneuver their vehicles into the shuttle, which then transports the loaded PEVs along a special shuttle lane separate from regular highway traffic. As the shuttle navigates through its dedicated lane, the video contrasts the smooth journey of the shuttle with the gridlocked cars on the highway. Inside, PEV drivers can take advantage of the travel time to relax, sleep, or work, while the shuttle efficiently (and presumably autonomously) handles transportation.

Upon reaching the destination, the shuttle unloads the fully charged PEVs, allowing the drivers to seamlessly continue their journey. This concept not only offers a solution for reducing traffic congestion, but also enhances the convenience and efficiency of urban travel.

The PEV Host Shuttle concept looks to combine the flexibility of personal electric vehicles with the efficiency of mass transit, all of which is enabled through cutting-edge, all-electric propulsion and autonomous driving technology. Pretty clever stuff, if properly implemented.

  1. More importantly, is that a Volt easter egg I see there? Is GM hinting at a new Volt in the near future?

  2. Sooo cool. Reminds me of a combo of the XP-512-e and the Vert-A-Pac railway cars used to transport Chevy Vegas. Two extremely important chapters in GM history.

  3. Might also consider using those PEV concept vehicles on railway cars. You could carry a lot more PEV’s and people could get out and go to a lounge car to stretch and relax. It could also have lavatories and other amenities like WiFi, beverages, snacks, etc. During the trip by rail, your PEV could be recharging too.
I’m thinking this might be a good idea along a high-density corridor like I-95.
