GM Defense And Mistral Reveal Light Tactical Vehicle Concept

Defense and police equipment contractor Mistral, Inc. has teamed up with GM Defense in development of a light wheeled tactical vehicle based on the Infantry Squad Vehicle, the partners announced on May 20th.

GM Defense will provide the vehicle, while Mistral and UVision will supply the Hero-120 “loitering munition” or drone that operates from the vehicle’s cargo bed, with the whole package available in different configurations for a range of clients and missions.

The light tactical vehicle by GM Defense uses many standard commercial parts for the Chevy Colorado ZR2, helping to control costs in addition to ensuring ready availability of spares. Many off-road components from Chevrolet Performance are included in the build to boost its cross-county mobility, while the number of seats can be adjusted as needed.

The “Hero-120” drone or loitering munition, meanwhile, can be used for recon and electronic warfare in addition to being capable of attacking targets “without exposing soldiers to direct enemy fire.” The drone can make precise strikes against “a variety of targets, including armored vehicles, enemy troops, field fortifications and urban structures” with little collateral damage.

John Johnson, GM Defense business VP, says the program addresses “an increased need for light tactical wheeled vehicles that deliver agility, speed and lethality.” He also remarked that The General’s “collaboration with Mistral demonstrates the versatility of our utility concept vehicle and its ability to enhance the tactical capabilities of warfighters.”

The light tactical vehicle is designed to be tough enough to operate in harsh environments for long periods without breaking down. It will offer a range of “modular kits” for different uses in the field, including setups for special forces. It will carry the Multi-Canister Launcher – Expeditionary or MCL-E which can launch multiple drones along with the necessary controllers.

GM initially debuted its Infantry Squad Vehicle or ISV in autumn of 2019, following a lightning-fast 18-week development. The vehicle was recently tested in the United Arab Emirates in 132 degrees F (56 degrees C) heat which proved the vehicle capable of traveling over 1,200 miles while remaining functional in extraordinarily challenging conditions.

Meanwhile, the vice president of Mistral claims that the collaboration with GM Defense “sets a new standard in military technology, providing the U.S. Army and allied forces with an unparalleled combination of mobility, precision and adaptability.”
