Former Ford Driver Kevin Harvick To Drive Kyle Larson’s NASCAR Chevy

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 in the Cup Series, is gunning to become the first driver since 2014 to race in both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Unfortunately, that poses a bit of a scheduling conflict for the 2021 champion, as he’ll have to miss a couple of Cup Series sessions at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday, May 17th, 2024, and possibly beyond. Thankfully, Kevin Harvick will cover for him, according to a report from NBC Sports.

Qualifying for the Indy 500 takes place on May 17th, and Larson won’t be able to make qualifying or practice for NASCAR’s annual All-Star race that day. Fortunately, Larson’s team owner, Rick Hendrick, tapped Harvick – a champion himself – to pilot the No. 5 Camaro in his stead.

Most recently, Kevin Harvick raced with the No. 4 on the doors of his Ford Mustang racer, which he drove from 2017 through 2023 for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) before hanging up his helmet at the end of last season. Harvick previously drove a Chevy for Richard Childress Racing, taking over the No. 29 Chevy to replace the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. before moving to SHR in 2014. SHR was allied with the Bow Tie brand through the 2016 season before switching manufacturers ahead of the 2017 season. Currently, Harvick serves as a commentator during broadcasts.

“When [Larson’s car owner] Rick [Hendrick] called a couple of days ago, he said, ‘Hey, I need a favor,’ and I know when the conversation starts like that, that usually you have to say yes,” Kevin Harvick said prior to last Sunday’s race at Dover. “I appreciate you guys calling. It’s going to be fun.”

Larson anticipates competing in the All-Star heat races on May 18th, but if he is unable to return to North Wilkesboro in time, Kevin Harvick will drive the No. 5 Camaro during these events as well. Larson is expected to compete in the All-Star race on May 19th, however.
