GM Authority has discovered intriguing new trademark applications filed by General Motors, indicating potential names for use in future Chevy models. The new trademark filings include names like Captiva, Cosmic, and Chevrolet Flare. Only one of these names has a clear implementation going forward, leaving the other two up to speculation.
First off, the Captiva name appears to be earmarked for the Chevy Captiva crossover, which has yet to launch in the Brazilian market. As GM Authority covered previously, the refreshed 2024 Captiva, which debuted in Mexico last year, features three rows of seating, a turbocharged 1.5L I4 engine with 144 horsepower, and exterior styling based on the Wuling Almaz RS, a variant produced by SAIC-GM-Wuling for the Indonesian market. Pricing for the Mexican-spec 2024 Chevy Captiva starts at 486,400 pesos (US$28,570 at current exchange rates, 5/29/2024).
Meanwhile, trademark filings for Cosmic and Flare are a bit more mysterious. These names may be used for future Chevy models, but they may also be used for new trim levels or packages for existing models. There’s even a possibility that “Cosmic Flare” could be a combined name for a single product.
Either way, these trademark filings were made with the INPI, or Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial, which is essentially Brazil’s equivalent of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Such filings are often the first step in a longer process of developing new products, suggesting that GM is actively planning to expand or update its lineup. Additionally, the new trademark filings list “Motorized land vehicles, namely automobiles” as the trademark classification type.
The Cosmic filing and Chevrolet Flare filings were made in February, while the Captiva filing was made in April. Check out the table below for more information:
Status | Country | Serial Number | Application Date | Classification |
---|---|---|---|---|
Cosmic | Brazil | 933473389 | February 8, 2024 | Motorized land vehicles, namely automobiles |
Chevrolet Flare | Brazil | 933508468 | February 14, 2024 | |
Captiva | Brazil | 934268495 | April 17, 2024 |

3 more crossovers incoming, yawn.
Oh, more disposable throwaway crossovers? NEXT.
GM’s cuv product mix is a mess.
Well, considering they’re for Brazilian models not sure how that’s relevant.
Nobody cares about GM’s trash cuvs no matter where in the world they are peddled- that’s the point.
The design language is a mess. The product mix is a mess (probably more so in the USA than BZ so I’ll give you that). The powertrains are a mess. But hey, they gotta force feed the masses something until they can figure out how to produce ultium in meaningful (and affordable) numbers.
As with some of the other’s comments, there is a clear message being given to the GM management. Minus Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade the GM SUV/CUV lineup needs major reinvention. In particular, Cadillac was gaining excitement with the Sport Wagon, Escalade and the performance “V” Series. Today, the “V” series is just not exciting, the Sport Wagon is gone leaving the Escalade to hold down the brand. The XT4 could be so much more if GM offered a better engine offering. That underpowered Turbo 4 is just holding back this model. The XT5 is a design bore. The XT6 is just ok.
Now for the new names being purposed, are you kidding, my first impression, these are names you give to toys. Really GM, what about bringing back: Belair or Cruze or Chevelle. As for new names: more so in the order of Breeze or Chase or the Richmond.
Sounds like more boring names for more boring vehicles. GM does have a flare for that.
No more Camaro = No care.
Cosmic, Captiva, Flare? Sound like stripper names…
They should bring back the Chevrolet Citation
The Baby Boomers will hate it.
Now you have me sold on the idea.
“Captiva” has been in the Chevy parts database as “Export” models for about a decade or so. Nothing new, just probably a new country it will be sold in.
“Cosmic” kind of sounds like a modernized “Vega”, with “Flare” being the sport model of same?
Who cares? They’re all for the Brazilian market.
These are Brasilian models, who cares.
Bring back the Chevrolet Cavalier
They did that for awhile … it was called Cruze! One of the best fuel mileage cars out there, until they killed it off to sell more profitable models, namely crossovers.
This is the way of Mary. I’m no Trump fan, but he was right on her.
