Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Blazer EV sales continued through only its third quarter during Q1 2024, joining an ever-growing list of entries in the mainstream electric vehicles (EV) passenger segment.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E (see running Ford Mustang Mach-E sales) led its segment with a substantial 77 percent uptick to 9,589 units, followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in second with an 18 percent leap to 6,822 units, and the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover in third with a 36 percent plunge to 6,167 units. The Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5’s corporate cousin and platform mate, placed fourth with a 19 percent bump to 4,059 units.

The Chevy Blazer EV sales were good enough for a two percent market share in its segment. The Mustang Mach-E posted a 35 percent share. The Ioniq 5 earned a 25 percent share, the ID.4 earned a 22 percent share, and the EV6 posted a 14 percent share.

The mainstream midsize EV crossover SUV segment accounted for 27,237 deliveries during Q1 2024, up 12 percent year-over-year.

The Chevy Blazer EV competes in the mainstream midsize EV crossover SUV segment, in which we currently include mainstream (non-luxury) BEVs that fit into the Compact Plus (C+) and Midsize (D) segments. Beyond the mainstream EV segment being discussed here, the remaining EV segment is the premium EV market that contains models from Tesla, Audi, Porsche, Cadillac, Acura, Jaguar, VinFast, and Genesis. Accordingly, we are not including Tesla models in the mainstream EV crossover segment sales analysis since they are considered premium/luxury models.

It’s also worth noting that some mainstream models also include variants with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and/or hybrid (HEV) and/or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. That includes the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and Mazda CX-70. Consequently, these models do not compare directly to the Chevy Blazer EV. As a result, these particular models are no longer included in our analysis. Additionally, while the Ioniq 5 is a crossover, the similarly named Ioniq 6 is an all-electric sedan and is not included in this analysis.

The GM Authority Take

Even before Chevy Blazer EV sales began, now in its third quarter, the all-electric midsize crossover was named 2024 MotorTrend SUV of the Year, with the publication saying that the 2024 Blazer EV is “easy to drive, easy to live with, easy to use,” offering a “fiery” design with real “swagger.”

The Chevy Blazer EV was also named to NACTOY’s “Best of 2024” list, being among the 25 vehicles advancing to the finalist round of the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards and one of 10 semifinalists for 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.

The latest addition to this EV’s trophy case is the 2024 Wards 10 Best Interiors and UX Award.

When the much-anticipated SS variant arrives, we expect Chevy Blazer EV sales to really take off if GM can build units as fast as it accelerates.

Fortunately, the Chevy Blazer EV inventory appears to be rising. As of mid-November, 287 units of the all-electric crossover had been delivered in the United States thus far, with 1,205 more units arriving at dealerships prior to the end of November, with at least 4,000 units of the Blazer EV either on the ground or en route, according to the inventory search tool on Chevy’s website. On December 1st, GM officially reported the first Chevy Blazer EV units built In Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant after months of production ramping up. The first batch of 6,127 Blazer EVs came off the assembly line in October as the team there was building 65 Blazer EV units per hour back in July.

Potentially impacting sales to start off the year is a Chevy Blazer EV stop-sale order, issued in January, which was still in effect in February as GM worked hard to resolve software issues. GM released a software update for the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV in mid-March. Consequently, certain units of the Blazer EV affected by the recent stop-sale order will be released from the order following the implementation of this latest software update.

Despite teething issues for this new electric crossover, we look forward to following Chevy Blazer EV sales performance. Meanwhile, while we wondered whether the internal combustion-powered Chevy Blazer had a future, we’ve learned there will be a 2025 Chevy Blazer in North America even though the GM Ramos Arizpe plant was initially set to produce only EVs by 2024.

The Chevy Blazer EV and its smaller sibling, the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV, are entering the largest EV segment on the market with interesting expected demographics. Take a look at the difference in size between these to EVs.

About Chevrolet Blazer EV

In July 2022, the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV made its official debut, ushering in the Bow Tie brand’s mass-market midsize battery-electric crossover. Headlined by a maximum GM-estimated range of 320 miles from a full charge, the Chevy Blazer EV will be available in front-, rear- and all-wheel drive configurations, while the trim level lineup will include 1LT, 2LT, RS, and Blazer EV SS, along with a Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) model for law enforcement, making it the quickest police package ever offered by Chevy.

The first two trim levels on sale are the Chevy Blazer EV 2LT AWD and RS AWD, but the upcoming RS RWD will include a higher capacity battery pack than these trim levels.

The GM Super Cruise advanced semi-autonomous driver assist system will also be available on the new Blazer EV.

The Bow Tie brand is even bringing a Super Sport model with the first-ever 2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS. A standard performance AWD propulsion configuration delivers up to 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque in the crossover, enabling a zero to 60 mph time of under four seconds in the Wide Open Watts (WOW) acceleration setting. Additional performance-focused features include a specific sport-tuned chassis and Brembo front brakes.

On a side note, the Chevy Blazer EV doesn’t include free home charging station installation like select buyers of the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV get.

Production of the 2025 Chevy Blazer EV is currently scheduled to kick off on June 3rd.

On the competitive front, the Rivian R2 was revealed as a potential Chevy Blazer EV rival, with the new SUV being the all-electric startup’s third passenger vehicle. The 2026 Rivian R2 follows the R1T pickup and R1S SUV and offers an off-road-oriented attitude and upscale approach, all with a smaller footprint than the two preceding Rivian models. The Rivian R2 will launch during the second half of the 2026 calendar year.

  1. How does the EV version compare in sales with the ICEV version now and in the future?

    Reply
    1. Considering it had a stop sale for most of Q1, it’s hard to say.

But if GM can beat or match the general market avg for EV sales (about 8% and growing), I would say that’s a good result.

  2. Sure the terrible rollout, stop sale order with dead batteries and black screens has tainted this vehicle in the eyes of many potential customers.

    Reply
    1. Not to mention many who were told and expected it to cost below $45k only for GM to then adjust it to $56k. Now that they lowered the price those customers moved onto other EVs. I remember one guy posting he waited on this car only to then be told it will cost almost as much as the Lyriq. That person moved onto getting an ID.4.

  3. “Potentially impacting sales to start off the year is a Chevy Blazer EV stop-sale order”

    Potentially? 🙄

    1. Buying one of these is like a roll of the dice. You might get lucky or you might not?? gm says the problems are “software” ? Some are, but others have had bad screens, bad sensors, bad switches, etc …. At this point, pass all the way on these regardless of price.

  4. A challenging beginning but it should change going forward. The best looking of the group is a big plus.

  5. Since Hyundai/Kia are the same. They should win having sold 11000 units.
Ford seems to have trouble making money with EVs even after charging ridiculous prices.

Will be interesting to see if they continue to make at least some of the upcoming Evs in the US and Canada. I don’t want any $2 an hour help building any car id buy since you end up with a vehicle thrown together that seems like they only paid people $2 an hour to build it.

    1. Worked in a plant that made “same” model as SKorea— our quality kept getting bad internal scores so they sent us a SK built to show how its done— there GCA score was 2.5x worse but it fit the internal scoring of the SK plant as a 99% car lofl.

    2. I found 1 thing interesting about the Blazer EV……even though made in Mexico, with the electric motor made in Mexico, it shows 65% USA/Canada parts content. That tops many cars assembled here

  6. Ford is making money with the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning. The local Ford dealer is selling every unit they get.

    Reply
    1. Really? A dealer in the PNW has 8 Lightening and 13 Mach-E in stock, and the former was recently a much larger number. They’re advertising a dealer discount of $7,000, although that might be due to sticker being the older Ford prices???

In contrast, the local Chevy dealer has 5 Blazer EVs, albiet with a $9,000 dealer discount.

      Reply
      1. Oh but they will tell you EVs are selling like hotcakes. They must be the one unicorn product in the economy that when sales are hot they get discounted (sales prices dropped in the case of Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid), and have been laying people off.

  7. Ford making $? They just announce losing $100K on every EV sold.

    Reply
    1. That’s a little disingenuous. That “loss” includes all the investment they are putting into retooling factories and building Ford Blue Oval mfg center.

They may be making a small positive margin on each EV, but not enough revenue to cover their overhead and capital expenditures.

      Reply
    2. That’s just an accounting number, and largely reflects who they account for startup and design charges. If they spread them out longer the number would be much smaller.

      Reply
  8. So 65/hour..2 shifts = about 1000 per day in November..20,000 per month on 40 hour work weeks So 3 months is 60,000 units and cust deliveries is 600- man I love this new math saying it is a roaring success.

  9. I wouldn’t compare against EV6 or IONIQ 5 of Mach-e, which are all more large hatchback/, small wagons, with low sedan-like clearance.

More comparable would be like the Solterra/BZ4X which have more similar ~8in ground clearance.

  10. Scrap the Blazer EV. Make it a hybrid instead.
Take the styling cues and apply them to the ICE Blazer.
    Winning combinations.

  11. At this pointy GM needs to cut their losses. I have dealt with several of these things and I would not let anyone I know drive one. They have serious and lingering problems. GM would have everyone think that the latest major software update and re-launch of the vehicle has fixed the issues. It did NOT! The Blazer EV is still a long way from being ready to compete in the market space. And with so many other offerings in the segment that are not plagued with problems, GM has missed the boat on many, many sales. The best they can do now is hope it still sells to some degree.

  12. So the Model Y AWD long range is 5k cheaper, yet not listed because it’s classified as premium/luxury….lol what’s that make the Blazer.

  13. Put the EV Blazer body on a Camaro chassis with a 6.2 V8. You couldn’t keep them in stock.

    Reply
    1. Seeing as the Camaro itself was such a resounding sales success, I’m not so sure about that…

Perhaps handcuffing your brand around a “Camaro styling-for-all” approach is part of the issue with today’s Chevrolet.

  14. My dealership sales staff told me that prior to the stop sale they had a lot of interest in the Blazer EV. Since the stop sale was lifted – crickets. I’m not sure GM can give this car away at this point.

    Reply
  15. My dealership has had zero interest before and after the stop sale. However, the lower Southeast states have very little interest in EV’s as primary vehicles anyway. We haven’t had the first test drive. We did sell Bolt’s and Bolt EUV’s. They did the job as a local commuter car. They weren’t the primary vehicle. People just aren’t interested in a Blazer EV for a road trip. GM isn’t either. You won’t see any GM district managers showing up in an EV. They all drive trucks and SUV’s with 6.2 V8’s. Mary doesn’t practice what she preaches.
