Check Out This Mystery Chevy Camaro Z/28 Design Prototype

Over the last week, GM Authority has spotted several interesting GM concept vehicles that appear to be headed to the crusher, including the 1990 Cadillac Aurora Concept, as well as the 2001 Pontiac REV Concept. Now, we’re back at it with what appears to be a never-before-seen Chevy Camaro Z/28 concept. Although this thing is clearly some kind of Camaro, what it is exactly remains unclear – and indeed, it’s possible this thing has never seen the light of day outside of GM’s internal development teams.

A mystery Chevy Camaro concept.

Once again spotted at GM’s scrapyard prep area, this particular model displays several interesting design cues that point towards the fifth-generation Camaro, in particular the face-lifted 2014 and 2015 model years. The rear end bears the traditional golden Chevy bow tie between the taillights and a white Z/28 logo on the passenger side of the trunk. While the backlight glass and shark fin antenna placement closely mimic the 2014-through-2015 Camaro, the rear fascia introduces some distinct variations as well.

Notably, the taillights on this prototype are slimmer, with a different arrangement of white and red lighting, showing large white sections surrounded by red accents, as compared to the production Camaro’s more balanced white-and-red graphics. Moreover, the trunk on this mystery model is positioned higher up, altering the rear deck profile significantly compared to the standard production Camaro, the latter which features a trunk cut-line that spans prominently between the lower portion of the taillights.

The rear bumper and diffuser area of the prototype also show dramatic alterations. Rather than the production Z/28’s low rear diffuser and quad exhaust tips, this model features an entirely new lower valance that starts high and dips towards the center, suggesting the possibility of a central exhaust setup.

Another notable change is the rear wing. Differing from the larger wing attached to the production Z/28, the prototype sports a slimmer, possibly pedestal-mounted wing with upward-curving tips at the outer edges, suggesting a blend of aerodynamic functionality and aesthetic flair.

Unfortunately, like many prototypes and concept vehicles that never transition into production, it appears that GM might soon consign this unique piece of automotive history to the crusher, as indicated by its current parking arrangement alongside other soon-to-be scrapped vehicles.

  7. It’a shame that GM has to crush all these photo types. Down the road, the past vehicles hay have survived, have brought big aution money. They are sold on a bill of sale. Maybe GM could auction these of on a bill of sale, for charity. This would keep them alive and make money for some great causes. Come on GM, lets see some good come of these vehicles1
